Where do you keep it? Wife has an X3...unless you toss it in the back and eat up the cargo space..........

Kind of defeats the purpose of a RFT doesn't it? If you don't care about the added weight, just get a spare. When the RFTs are out of tread, replace with traditional tires.

it kinda does. but if you're gonna complain about having RFTs, put a freakin spare in the trunk. if you're gonna complain about that, don't buy a newer bmw. nobody likes the runflats, they ride rough and they aren't a solution that allows you to drive on them on the highway for an hour+. but they will get you to the next exit, to a tire shop, or home if you're close. only a full size spare solves all the problems, even a donut has a limited life on the road.

agreed on replacing with traditional tires. but since you don't have the insurance a runflat provides and you don't have a spare, you're really setting yourself up for disappointment unless you do some other planning.

Non runflats will generally absorb less damage from potholes than runflats because they are lighter and flex more than runflats. I never felt safe with runflats.

forget all this RFT v non-RFT babble ...
here's the more important question

WHERE DA HECK IS THIS MONSTER POTHOLE FROM HELL? So i can be sure to avoid it

btw, please make a claim with whatever governmental entity (if this was on the highway, then caltrans?) to get reimbursed for tire replacement cost
you'll probably get rejected at first but keep at it

Was a spare not an option on the X3? I thought I heard it was, like it was on our X5.

On the F30, I'm curious if there's actually no longer space for the spare tire anymore, even a space-saver? I know there's no tire-well, just curious what BMW is doing with that space instead below the trunk floor.

I've lost 2 RFTs on Los Angeles roads in the past 2 years on my F30s. Where can I file a claim?

It does eat up space, but in the year since I changed to the much better riding non-RFT MPSS's I have kept the spare in the trunk at all times and never once ached for more space.

Well, except for when I took the F30 for a family vacation.

As for reimbursement, I've twice had pothole blowouts and twice successfully got reimbursed for the damage. A car tire on Lake Shore Drive in Chicago and a bike tire on a UConn campus road. Each time the whole process did take the better part of a year. In both cases quickly went back to take pictures of the potholes, the tire and rim and a receipt of the repairs. Both potholes were filled quickly after I filed.

It's an e83 X3 so not the latest model. Stored underneath the car.

I agree. I think someone should make an interactive map of big potholes (maybe using some sort of standard like at least 10 inch in diameter, 3 inch deep, etc...) to inform drivers. And update those locations as repairs are made...

Someone tech savvy please create an app for this and give me some money for this idea.

I think people's points about having a bubble in the sidewall on a runflat are spot on. That's why the tire failed. Lesson for all of us really.

What used to be a full size tire well is exactly that now cut in half, so there is a half moon shape. Good to store anything that looks like a "D".

Under the rear cargo cover, there is some space for 'stuff' thats compartmentalized...maybe you could have ordered a space saver there? Not sure....it's a 2012.

at 47,000 miles, and one bubble in the front side wall after a solid pothole hit in NJ 2 months ago, I'm getting new go flat tires tomorrow...General G-Max AS-05, they just came out, W speed rating. And I ordered a donut spare tire kit from BavAuto. Over $1,000 outlay. I hated the run flats like all others.

Looks just like mine. I already had the spare from my old X1 and just switched to non run flats after a pothole took out one of the run flats.

No, definitely not. My point was that at the end of the day, if you aren't carrying a spare, and you get bad enough damage to your tire, you're going to call a truck anyways, runflats or otherwise. Runflats might be good for a handful of people in certain situations, but with a spare or repair kit, you're going to be just as well off. Might as well enjoy the non-runflat ride!

I had something like this happen to my car before. I was able to re-vulcanize the sidewall which was torn as badly as st3v with Flex-Seal.
