Speedometer intermittent...any thoughts?

Gents, new to this car (F87 19 M2C) and getting some strange engine speeds from time to time....jumps ~20mph in either direction intermittently when holding throttle inputs steady.

Im getting the impression the speed sensor is failing, but dont know how/where it is located nor if it is a direct sensor or interpolated from something other than the trans output shaft rpm. Years past the sensor(s) were on the differential itself, but is that still the case with these modern F8x cars?

if it were failing, wouldnt i also get other symptoms like limp mode or ABS light or something?

Any input would be great.
