Hi, I have a 2017 lci 435d with 50000 miles and, when driving it the other day the steering suddenly felt slightly "notchy" when turning the steering from the central position.
However,when you turn the steering wheel when the car is stationary it feels fine, smooth and progressive.
If anyone has any ideas as to what's causing this please let me know, Thank you.

I have this opposite problem (because of coilovers lol)

Worth taking the front wheels off to clean and inspect if there’s any play from any of the smaller suspension components. End links often break for this car, especially if it’s been lowered in springs

I'm hoping it's something like you've mentioned, I did have an independent have a quick look at it, he only turned the wheel when stationary and he said the rack was fine.

By 'Notchy' do you mean you can feel it in the steering wheel and or hear something, or that you have to make small micro adjustments to the steering wheel when in a turn?
I noticed the later in my car with a low tire pressure in the front of the car. So when I adjusted the front tire pressures to OEM spec or slightly higher the condition improved.

The wheel when straight seems to be okay until you make a slight turn left or right when there is a very slight resistance and then you feel no resistance and it repeats this as you turn rather than being linear and smooth, and there isn't any noise when it does this.

There has to be something going on here, I have a 19 440i and the steering has always been quick to go to the left or right from center. I think this is indicative of the road surface in combination with the run flat tires.

As others have said, have someone take a peak at the suspension and also the electric power steering motor.

It is strange, it just suddenly started when I was driving the other day, never noticed it before.
I checked tyre pressures, they seem okay, I may get the tracking checked and adjusted to see if that makes any difference.
I have read that the Thrust Arm Tension struts could be to blame, I will have a look for leaks.

That year of car has a "dead spot" in the center of the steering which is amplified in sport mode. There is a SIB for it that updates the steering software that fixes it.

Is that what you mean? I found it brutal -- felt like an old vehicle with a worn out steering rack. After the update, its been perfect.

At best it'll just need the repair kit (providing it's the ThyssenKrupp rack), or new top mount bearings. At worst the whole rack will need replacing.

There is no power assistance when steering straight ahead, so if the assistance is coming and going during a turn, that is a safety concern. If you have a BMW warranty on it, I'd call it in personally.

If no warranty, it's basic checks time, and a scan for steering/ABS module related fault codes.
