I think it's like auto start-stop but it happens when you're coasting to save gas. Not 100% though.

How do you get "adaptive steering" out of ASS? I guess there is an A and S in that haha. But yes, ASS = "Auto start/stop". Adaptive steering is part of dynamic handling package and usually goes by "DHP" |

Yeah, when I test drove the BMW's it was too hot to trigger the ASS so I have no idea if it's any good or not. I suspect it's probably fine for when my wife is driving in eco mode. |

Yes the sail mode happens at certain speeds/conditions while cruising. Basically acts like the auto start/stop feature (sans the need for depressing brake pedal). once throttle is re-engaged, the engine turns back on. I experienced this in a loaner active hybird3 and it was pretty pointless IMO. It barely occurred and when it did, usually only shut off for a couple seconds before kicking back in. More of an annoyance than fuel saving if you ask me.

I don't think the engine turns off... I think the driveline disconnects and the rpms drop.

Thought I'd post some "reviews" since there weren't any yet.
These can be found at this thread: http://www.f30post.com/forums/showthread.php?p=14423510 "holy hell this car is amazing" - orma "The NBT NAV is quick and very nice. The touch pad iDrive controller is very nice. " - Frank_NJ

I agree with pablok, sail mode does not turn off the engine while coasting based on what I have read. It does decouple the motor from the torque converter so there is no parasitic loss or drag when coasting. You are essentially free wheeling when coasting.
Agree with OP, will be interesting to hear how this works in the real world. |

Hopefully it will be reliable otherwise you will spend more money on repairing the transmission from all this decoupling than money saved in fuel efficiency. |
