N20 timing chain
So after many days of hearing a whine at startup and through the rpm range, although not super loud like others I've heard. I decided to bring in my 2014 238i n20. I explained the noise to the tech and manager they said a field service tech would also look at it. Tech tole me they are aware of the issue with the n20 as many people are now but they could not hear the noise I described.
Meanwhile I'm driving my loaner 2017 x3 n26 maybe n20 did not look just as noisy but no whine and seemed to have more power then mine. Anyways get a call this moraning after a couple days and having the FST look at it, turns out it needs a new timing chain, guide, oil pump, oil pump chain and valve cover. At 30k miles just last week, thank god for a warranty, I was so nervous about this happening I probably willed it to happen some how. Anyways get your n20s looked at while in warranty. |

I'm always afraid of this nightmare situation occurring so I signed up for the extended warranty. It doesn't seem the B58's have had any major issues like this so hoping that it's not the case, just because of the inconvenience and possibly even being stranded in the middle of a highway. Is your timing chain in the back of the motor? It may necessitate an engine out procedure to replace everything. I believe the B58/B48 still has the timing chain in the back as well, for packaging purposes and weight balance with the water pump and alternator in the front. The chain and guide aren't supposed to fail but unfortunately this isn't always the case.

Do you happen to know if your 2014 had the old version of timing belt/guide?
IIRC BMW made the switch mid way through 2014 for the newer timing/guide. Would be curious to see if it was the old or new design that was having issues. |

It ended up being the Timing chain, and guide, along with that they replaced the oil pump and chain and sprockets and valve cover as necessary for the repair.
i still have a slight whine at cold, and a similar rattle with this n20, not as bad as it was but i do suspect it may be still having oil issues there seems to be a leak underneath near the oil pan but above it have yet to get my scope all the way in there. Back to the dealer it will go. |

As of now the motor seems strong, sometimes a placebo effect with noises and repairs. It always sounds funny to me so its hard to base it off anything. Im planing to video the motor while running here soon to keep for reference, it seems a bit overboard due to being in warranty for another 1 1/2 years but might give me some closure . Other then that i cracked the inner lip on one of my 20" 361s the other day the was pleasant.

so i did asked them about "whine noise" and they said that's not definite diagnosis for the issue. I took a oil cap off and looked down at the timing chain and it doesn't look beat up but i can move it side to side without putting a lot of force on it.
