GSR Technik N20 Tune Feedback

I've had the tune for 2 days now and here are some of my first initial impressions. As for install, these guys from GSR are very detailed. No short cuts, no drilling ECU, no extra wires hanging around in the engine bay. I was quite nervous but they handled the ECU very carefully and even sealing it back looking like normal. Everything looks like nothing has been tampered with. Also a lot of runs to make sure it was consistent and that the numbers are safe within the car's parameters. Also neat that it can be varied to your driving style (where do you want the power, etc).

Driving impressions: In comfort mode, it is how the car should have been stock. Throttle response is a bit better and when you give it some, it can still pull. I would describe the change in comfort subtle but good. As for sport mode...that is a different story. The torque..oh my goodness the torque. I have the Pilot Super Sports and boy when I give it the gas these tires still chirped. The acceleration is immense. Not jolty at all (comfort can kinda seem that way) but in sport it just pulls, and quite smoothly at that. I would describe it as addicting. Very addicting. It puts a smile on my face

Numbers are numbers. To me it is about the experience and the experience is great. Acceleration is really fun but of course, be careful as I mentioned it can be addicting and you don't want to land in hot water with the police.
As for those that care about numbers well they are impressive as well and so here is a link for the graph:

http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...6#post17920526

I will probably update with more feedback later on as these are just initial impressions for 2 days. All sorts of driving to be done...
I am quite happy though and definitely some peace of mind

Thanks for the review.

Is this a Stage 1 tune or stage 2 tune with matching bolton's?

Also are you running a auto transmission? If auto have you experienced any torque limiter issues?

Edit: my bad. I looked at the link and saw stage 1. Still according to the spec on the 8AT trans 450Nm (332lbft) is the limit. Which means your torque number of 340lbft is just over the limit. In which case it will be interesting to see if you get any issues when you hammer it.

According to the link he supplied it was a stage 1 tune, auto trans running 91. Those are awesome torque numbers. They would be even higher out here in FL where we have 93. But the question still stands...are there any misfires going WOT at 3-4.5k rpm using 91?

We tuned it to run below 350 wtq. Goon, I think you were well above 350 wtq thus getting into that torque limit. We will be testing a Stage 2 car out here in the next couple weeks so we'll see if we get into the torque limit with that car.

Hopefully you guys will be able to keep the stage 2 numbers as high as they are and just increase the trans torque limit number.

If not, I'd be happy with 300hp and 350lbft at the wheel...

ie for me the torque is plenty. But it would be great to hold it for longer and get that 300whp

Great! I'm getting it too

Got Stage 2 bolt-ons so will step up to that once the torque limit issue is resolved. Hopefully not too long...

Running a completely stock N26 328i xdrive with the 8AT automatic transmission, what gains should I expect? Also does any of the stock components need to be upgraded? I really want the engine to remain stock as possible due to the car being leased....

My concern is the warranty. But I love the power gain potential ...

What is feasibility and cost of having a stock 2nd ecm on hand for these cars? I have a spare for my SS that I use for smog testing ....

**edit*. Found the answer elsewhere. Possible but not cheap to acquire another box for a stock tune ...

New DME will cost approx $1300... and will take BMW Germany about 3-6 weeks to code to your VIN. Not really a big deal.. you know, cost vs value, if you really think about it.

Thanks. And I thought the spare GM at $300 was pricey lol

Sorry there hasn't been many updates as I've been quite busy but I've noticed there have been quite a number of other GSR N20 tune feedbacks and they all seem to share the same opinion, which is that it's great. And I can honestly agree. Having been one of the first to have it, I can definitely say that it wasn't perfect at first. However they are constantly updating it, making sure no more codes are thrown, not too much boost/overboost, and everything within the safety limits of the engine so it knows when to dial back so you dont damage your engine or anything. Also they constantly try to make the power more linear and smoother. I can say this latest version is near perfect if not perfect. Great noticeable smooth power. Not to mention Matt and Bobby are great to work with, explain everything, and of course are constantly trying to make the product better. They will reflash it as many times as you want or need!

Great feedback PCR0303
How many times you needed an update? What codes were you getting or got if any?
Tested your 1/4 mile time at the drag yet or power band on GSR Dyno?

I've asked VMRWheels since they have a nice 228 GSR but have not heard back from them on the forums in regards to the car. They just posted a Dynojet with Mods and the power it's making.

I've updated it twice. I was only getting codes from the very initial product when it was released and they were overboost codes. It's MUCH smoother now. I have yet to do 0-60s, 1/4 mile, or dyno the most recent version but I'm content with the feel of it and real life scenario use like overtaking and just hooning it from stoplight to stoplight without knowing the numbers.
