The trick with the invisicord is that when you think you've hit the end, you need to push further.

haha,

I know what he means though. you can push the pins in a bit, but they will go in a bit further. Still don't want to overpower it because they do seem fragile.

Anyone know if there is a constant live and a switched live near the mirror? I need both for my accident camera.

I was hoping someone could answer this question, since I am interested in doing the same with my dash cam.

I have my 9500xi mounted to the compass power which goes on and off with the car's power (no need for manually turning the radar on/off). my mute button comes out to the right of my legs (to the left of the shifter column), velcro'd to that wall. i like the mute and lockout functionality and use it from time to time, so i like not having to reach up to the radar each time to do this!

don't have any pics of the mute button handy, but here's where the radar sits:

No power on hot days . . .

MCalc-

First of all, I'm sorry that it's taken me this long to see this. I've been out of the country for a long time and have had no stable internet.

Anyway, I had this problem as well. At first I thought it was the invisicord and ordered a replacement. Still had the issue. After sitting with the mirror housing open and trying to see what the problem was, I discovered I had bent one of the invisicord pins in the initial install. Not much, but just enough where the length of the pin was compromised by a fraction of millimeter. I reasoned that with the heated car, the shrink tubing around the invisicord would swell a bit and pull the pin out just a hair. But that withdrawal caused the power failure to the RD. So I straightened out the pin and pushed it in.

Like others have said, once you push it in, push it in further. It needs to go all the way in to work (that's what she said).

Since I did that, I hadn't had any problems regardless of how hot the days were.

Hope that helps.

Mirror plastic cover removal . . .

I meant to do this earlier. But as a tip, take a credit card or other plastic card. Find the seam of the two halves of the mirror housing. Push the edge of the credit card into that seam and the two halves of the mirror housing will just pop open. No needless worrying about them breaking.

Hope that helps.

I still have the problem of my RD not powering on when it's hot. Now that the days are getting hotter in texas it's not working as reliably as before. I already took everything out and will redo it to see if I can fix the prob.

I'm going to try this. I've been having the intermittent power problems like others. I wish I had gotten a longer wire.

just wired my passport max with the invisicord ... following this thread. everything works perfectly.

It is soooo nice not having the cord and how the radar now automatically turns on and off with the car. best $20 mod ever

not sure I even need the blendmount, but we'll see...

thanks OP

Choose your Mirror Tap Correctly!

I followed JBM and ShawnSheridan's instructions wiring my Escort using a MirrorTap but ran into a problem, now resolved. Mark at Mirrortap.com has a special version of the device that has slightly longer pins which he says are necessary to make a good connection on a BMW. Be sure to order that one.
I tested the ground and hot wires and found the instructions to be correct. Once I had the correct mirrortap the install was very easy.
The plastic housing around the rear-view mirror pops apart easily with the insertion of a small screwdriver at the top. It pops back together without any problem.
As for mounting the radar detector, while the Blendmount system seems nifty it puts the detector quite low, perhaps obstructing the driver's line of sight. I prefer my unit higher. Having it higher also makes it much less noticeable to thieves and police. I don't like suction cups which have a problem sticking in very hot and very cold weather. I have found that in both my M4 and previous M3 that you can use the sun-visor clip - this thing: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
With a little persuading you can wiggle the clip into the small gap between the roof liner and the windshield. You can use a bit of black felt or other material to get the angle just right and any wiggle out. This will put the detector right against the windshield, as high as possible and largely out of sight. You might find that the sun-visor will not fold forward as much as you would like but it is a small price to pay for the perfect location. Also, in California it is not legal to attach anything to your windshield with suction cups and this method does not violate that restriction.
I now have the detector mounted just where I like it and the mirrortap made the wiring very easy.

Does anyone know what is the maximum safe power (wattage) that can be pulled from the mirror 12V tap?

Thanks JMB!

For anyone who is wondering if anything changed for 2015, I hooked up my Passport/Escort in my 2015 435 today and it was identical to what JMB originally posted.

Have 3 hours left on an eBay bid for a Passport for $100..! I won't pay $400 for it because I'm not a Nascar driver and thats way to much $$$ if you ask me, but for $100 I'd love to try this out on my 335i.. The Cobra I have now just sets off too many false alarms..!

If you are running a cord from the radar detector into the rear mirror wiring area, what is that cord running from the top of the mirror into the roofline?

How do you have the mute button plugged into the detector when you are using the inviscord or mirror tap type cord into the jack the mute button normally uses? Also, has anyone heard of a warranty issue using a mirror tap like this? Thanks.

Hoping to revive a dead thread but I can't push the pins in any farther due to the diameter of the base of the pins conflicting with the diameter of the insulation on the factory wires. How long do the pins themselves need to be to make connection? The cord I have came with pins about 1 cm or 3/8" long.

I'll jump onboard the dead horse train, but I have 6 wires in my molex plug. I tried the brown/black and green wires but no luck.. Do I need a different wire? I don't have active lane departure.. I already have an invisicord, I don't want to have to open anything else up to do this. I do have the mini taps though I think, but they seem pretty secure once I get them in there.

I didnt use invisicord but another brand, i think. The issue for me was that the pins on the cord weren't long enough. They were maybe only 3/8". I ended up getting some brass nails like this: http://www.woodcraft.com/product/150...auge-2-oz.aspx

I nipped the heads off and soldered them on the too-short stock pins. I had lots of headaches figuring out that you really need to get in there deeply to get the job done <insert joke of your choice here> No problems since.
