New 435ix Fuel System Failure

Sorry about the length of this post!
2 Weeks ago pick up my new 435ix Coupe
The important Stuff: Mineral Grey, Coral Red
MSport, MSport Brakes, 6MT,ZDH, ZLP, ZTP

After picking up the fabulous car, my wife and I took a leisurely drive through the countryside. Drove 100 miles. All went fine. Took it very easy. Work in the brakes and clutch. No highways at all. Learn the new steering. (Still hate the run flats)

Next morning (Sunday) of course let's go!, I actually read the manual. Get on I95 then back roads; and understand the Sport, Sport+ settings. Check out the blue brakes.
What is better than your first real day with your new BMW?
Car started fine. Backed out of garage, and proceeded down my long driveway.
We are on a fair hill, and the first hard curves are very tight, with stone walls on both sides of the drive. Very challenging in the snow.

All of the sudden 435ix dies, engine instantly off. Warning about fuel supply (see attached picture taken later in the day). It was all I could do to wrestle the dead steering to prevent smashing into the walls. Nasty. Missed by inches.
In three minutes we would have been traveling well over the posted limit on I95. A bit crazy thinking about the failure occurring at the wrong moment on a crowded highway.
My wife claims an angel interceded. I’ll take it.

Called BMW Assist, they came immediately and flat bedded the car back to the dealer. I knew precisely where the tow hook was located.

Service Manager calls me at 8:02am next day. Got on it immediately.
Low Pressure Fuel Pump failure. First they have ever seen.
All I can think of is the High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) failures in the N54's.
Again? Requested they QC the fuel system back to front before they give me my car. Claim all is ok, no explanation for the failure....

BTW, Very good things to say about the dealer, BMW of Mount Kisco (NY) and the service manager Vincent Robustello. They did everything possible to help me out. Also, great deal on the car from Damian Lisotta in sales.

So now I've got 1000 miles on the car and all appears well. Still concerned about the fuel system, but love the car!
Putting on Michelin Pilot Super Sports tomorrow. Time to go to Lime Rock.

Has anyone had a similar problem?

Martin

Yikes! Thanks for posting. Hope that's the last of the problems you have. My 2014 335i has been rock-solid, no issues.

Getting mine next week. I think somebody with an F30 recently posted the same problem. Hope this is an isolated case. Good to hear it's all fixed. It really matters how the dealer treats you and deals with the problem. It's much easier to forgive when you get treated right. Your dealer seems to get it.

Interesting timing. A friend of ours who just picked up her 428ix Coupe a few weeks ago was driving when the engine shook and then just died in the middle of the road. Unlike in CT, here in Toronto, BMW generally cares less and took well over an hour to "rescue" her.

This happened a mere few hours ago, so they haven't diagnosed the problem. But I suspect the fuel system. Obviously she's pissed that something like this could happen to a car that's only weeks old.

I've had my 435i since last November. Not one issue.

Congratulations. But how is that relevant for this thread?

Just an update from my post above... our friend's car was diagnosed by the dealer and the problem was a faulty fuel pump, so same as the original poster. She was given a loaner 320i because it will take 3 weeks to get the part in due to severe backorder.

Smart move on the Michelin PSS. The difference is night and day between the RFT and PSS. Enjoy.

BTW
Spent past Saturday on the track (Lime Rock) with a lot of 6500rpm time and absolutely no fuel delivery issues.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but I thought I'd add my experience on this topic. My 2014 435i xDrive had this exact same problem while driving today. Luckily the car died right before I was about to enter the freeway, otherwise I would've been in real trouble, and this was during rush hour! Driving normally at 40km/h and the car suddenly died, complete loss of power. Tried starting it up and each time the starter would work but the engine never turned out.

Had to coast the car down onto the side of the road and called BMW to send a flat bed. 30 minutes later the truck arrives and takes my car to the dealer. Unfortunately the service centre was closed so I'll have to find out what the verdict is tomorrow.

First major problem with the car.. and after finding several other potential recals on this car I want the dealer to address all of them before giving the car back to me. My concern is lead time. the advisor said I would have to wait 5 days before they can check my car. I'm assuming they'll give me a rental car until they sort this out.

I found the same recall notice. It's what I thought would be the problem with my car but strangely when I contacted the dealer today they said my car wasn't affected by this recall

The service advisor told me they would not have anyone available check the vehicle for another 4 days. So I'm left stranded with no car, and they offered me a corporate rate to rent a car at the enterprise nextdoor. Is this normal??

I'm paying for my BMW, but I'm not able to drive it because of an engine failure while I'm driving on the road, and now it's in queue to be looked at.

Log on to MyBMW Canada and check for recall notices on your vehicle. As your car is still under warranty, I would request a loaner or that the dealership cover the rental.
