How are european license plates attached to cars? Double sided tape?

Just a stupid thing I have wondered about...

Germany, for example, has those european style extra long license plates. Looking at pictures, I never see license plate frames or other devices used.

How are they attached? Double sided tape or something? It seems like sometimes there is a plastic clip-in adapter but how is that attached?

There's also other options, like a flush-mounted plate frame that just barely comes around the edges so that it's hard to see in pics.

They can be screwed as well. The car would come with a tray, then you can glue or screw in the plate.

Yea that's what i did. Screwed in the plastic frame then attached the license plate to the frame.
