Is it possible for sport mode to malfunction?

Recently I have been driving only in sport mode because in comfort mode the wheel is too light. Yesterday morning I start up my car press the button for sport mode and the wheel feels much lighter than I remember it too.

Now is it possible for the system to malfunction since its an electronic system?

Have any of you had this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Do you have the speed sensitive steering?
That might be what you notice...

In any case you can turn the wheel while parked then switch to sport and turn it back.
It should be "heavier" in sport.

Is it possible that the settings got changed in iDrive? You can choose drivetrain only, chassis only, or both. Switching this setting would affect the steering too I believe.

My 328i does not have that function where you can choose if its drivetrain and/or chasis . Its the Luxury line so it only has the "sport display" option when I switch to sport mode.

I can attest that these cars electronics can malfunction, it appears that BMW spent the budget on creating an elaborate "self diagnosics" system that generates malfunction warnings for most of the electronics. Believe me, I have experienced most of them over the past 1.5 years! I wish BMW spent more time either designing a more reliable system or a better method to diagnose and FIX the glitches. I have owned many cars over the past 25 years but have never had one as bad as this! I hope you have better luck with your issues than I had.

Not in a '12, though.

If there are no warnings, and the steering wheel seems to be the only difference, I have a theory.

Have you checked the tire pressure? Sometimes low pressure can lead to more play in the steering wheel.

The rack is totally electronic now with maybe a thousand redundant sensors. Not really a way for steering to "fail" of sorts without bells going off.

As long as that drive selector button works (display shows sport setting engaged), I think the system is working properly. Would tell you if otherwise.

Interesting...I have a '13 335i (1/13 production, 3/13 delivery) and I've had ZERO "glitches" with the electronics.

The rack is electronically (electric motor) assisted - it's not "steer-by-wire" - but yes, it does have steering-angle sensors and other means of indicating a failure in the system.

Did the sport mode actually activate?

Sport mode can be prevented from function if tire pressures are low. Any tire pressure/warning issues?
