N20 going down?
Had my 2014 F31 in for a routine service. Approx 15000km (10k miles). Found that valve cover gasket needed replacement. When returned the car threw a CEL the next day. New plugs/injectors/coil packs (or something related) installed. Car not running well and I was given a service loaner. No idea what the issue may be. Will be referred to the BMW technical support for ideas.
Thankfully the car is still under warranty. The 320i sedan I got on loan is a lot smoother than my F31 was. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks. |

Leakdown and compression tests normal but one cylinder apparently looked a bit fouled somehow. Now the plan is to put in a new DME control module. I may get the car back in a few weeks!

It's been over two weeks now. DME module replaced and vehicle still doesn't run. The dealer is back to the PUMA case for answers... Sounds like my first and last BMW.

Some sort of semi-random early engine failure that could happen in a Toyota or Honda and you're going to give up?

^ I don't think it is unreasonable to consider selling this car. It has suffered from some serious yet undiagnosed engine problem I am not confident in carrying it off warranty. As for BMW, in general I expected better service than to be without my car for five weeks now and they still don't know what the problem is. The dealer's tone is very passive and they are irritated when I call for updates. Not good in my books.

It's funny how service can color your opinion of a car. I bet if the SA had been apologetic and kept you updated with their efforts, you'd still be a loyal BMW owner.

New cylinder head installed and car is running well at this time. The tech used some sort of walnut shell compound to clean up cylinder 1 due the carbon deposits. I will drive it for awhile and see if it's worth unloading or taking the risk of driving it off warranty.

Carbon buildup
They only have to walnut blast 1 cylinder? That sounds odd

I don't know if your referring to PUMA as in the PUMA gas stations I can tell you that I had a similar problem with my 1 series not that severe tough but I stopped using PUMA gas on him and It had no more problems. Before buying my BMW I tested a lot of brands Benz, Audi, Lexus, Etc and the only one that had the best performance and value for the car was BMW, don't give up on the brand they are great. Hope you don't have another problem with your car or with the service stations which it seems that they suck worldwide.

Yeah not sure what PUMA stands for but it is some sort of warranty case that requires more research and approval than the dealer can do - not a gas station.
Yes it was only cylinder 1 that was fouled because of faulty valvetronic system. Somehow they were able to disable the valvetronic system in the diagnostics and the cylinder misfire problem went away. Seems to run fine now... |
