93 Octane at BJ's Warehouse
Gas is getting expensive. That's an understatement, for sure.
I have a 2018, 440i xDrive, GC. I bought her used, about 9 months ago (Side bar: the most fun in a car, I have ever had). I only put 93 Octane in her, since I have owned her. Certainly have no idea what was used prior. But 93 is the love I show her haha. Currently, Gas prices are just getting out of control, here in New York State. Few days ago, 93 was $4.50 per gallon at Exon Mobil. Same day, I was shopping at BJ's warehouse for groceries and I see they have 93 Octane at 3.89/gallon. That is savings of $0.60 per gallon and adds up quickly - even more so, after time. My local Exon M station only has 89 and 93. No 91. And so there, I have no choice but to put my money on the table and bend over. BJ's has 91 and 93. And the 93 is the best price going. I decided to fill her up at BJ's that day. And, I know it's only one fill, but she has all the power and no complaints, so far. I understand that, in theory, you get what you pay for. However, that's not always true. I buy Bumble Bee Tuna from Walmart at $2.14 per can. Local supermarket is #$2.89 per can. It's the same brand and same tuna. Gas is different, yes. I assume BJ's is not top tier and buying whatever they can get their hands on, for the cheapest price. I have read there is POSSIBLY more sediment in the cheaper 93 octane. What's everyone's feeling about gas at places like BJ's, where you can get premium at a discount price. Is it worth the savings? Or am I hurting that sweet girl parked outside haha |

I always fill up with gas from BJ's when I'm visiting my parents in MA. They've been exclusively filling both of their cars (MB and BMW) with 93 from there for about 10 years now with no issues. The savings is sometimes as much as $0.75 a gallon!!

That is good news, because the price gap between Exon and BJ's seems to grow every day, here. And, depending on what I buy at BJ's that day .. . I can get much deeper discounts on my gas too.

Not sure about BJs, but Costco/Kirkland gasoline falls into the "Top Tier" gasoline brands. I've stuck with BP since thats what I had used on my tuned WRX prior to my BMW. But with gas prices on the rise, I'm thinking of making a switch to Costco gas. I have BP credit card which saves me $0.15 per gallon which is nice, but its still more expensive than Costco.

Not all fuel is the same though. It is coming from the same refinery, but not necessary the same quality.
The 7-11 by my old place used to have fuel with insanely high Sulphur content. You could smell it in the exhaust and on your clothes (I was putting it through my ATV). The Petro-Canada that I was putting in my car didn't smell at all. Costco buys almost generic fuel (meets some sort of requirement, from the cheapest refinery at the day), and then blends in their top-tier additives and octane at the pump to ensure you get a consistent product that meets the top-tier specs. My 2-cents, so keep that in mind. |
