Sorry if this is the wrong place to post. My 2016 328i averages 18.8mpg according to the car. I'm not a crazy driver or anything in my opinion ha. Is this normal, or do I need to get this checked out. Thanks in advance!

more of town driving 30-40 mph, light traffic and not a ton of stopping. as well as freeway and highway, also not a ton traffic or stops. maybe 20 miles distance

My 2026 X1 which has a 4 cyl b48 engine, I believe, and my 340 b58 both get between 19 and 21 mpg in mixed city and parkway/highway driving. If I have more sitting to drop off or pick up kids it is on the lower end and of course more highway it is on the higher end. I drive both regularly and really both are very similar in gas mileage for around town driving. Certainly I can make my vehicles drink gas if I drive more spirited. Hope that helps.

your driving sounds reasonable enough, such that i would think mpg would be higher.

are your engine and wheels stock? any engine modifications or problems? tire pressures correct? typical engine maintenance intervals complete and within reason?

Garage List
Have you measured it by calculating your mileage and how many gallons you put back in?
The car thing isn’t the most accurate and needs resetting

not as far as i know. i got the car like 3 weeks ago so i'm not really sure but I do not believe there are any modifications. I took it in to get a drivetrain malfunction diagnosed earlier this week but they said it was nothing, and didn't see anything there.

Where are you located? Cold weather (under 30F) can affect mileage.

What are your tires air pressure set to? Low pressure can cause poor mileage too.

It's in the 50-70s where I live. My tire pressure is set to like 31-32 I believe.

As chowser51 mentioned, did you reset the MPG counter? If it was on the lot doing a lot of idling, short trips, it will have the averages all out of wack.

I might be confused but it seems to just reset when I restart the car. It no longer showers, I go to the trip display but it doesn't show the MPG and seems like it restarts. I will probably wait until I run out of gas and try to do it manually.

Where are you looking at this? There is a an instantaneous MPG, as well as a rolling average. When you use the BC button on the left stalk, it will toggle through them on that lower triangle portion of the speedometer cluster (above your mileage).

When you the rolling average, holding the BC button will reset it back to zero.

Yeah I did the average one. I tried resetting it but it didn't seem to work for me but maybe it did and it only restarted when I restarted my car or something and that's why. It is slightly better, at 20 mpg, but tbh that's still lower than I was expecting.
Edit: sorry abt the double quotes, this app confuses me..

That average will change over time. If you do a lot of accelerations, it will drop off pretty quickly. If you get enough mileage and "normal" driving, it should get to something that makes a bit more sense.

It does ignore those hard accelerations over time though. It's the reason the dash number doesn't fully agree with the pen & paper method.

I get around 21 to 23 mpg but I'm in sport mode all the time and generally cruise between 2500 and 3000 rpm depending on conditions.

per chowser51 comment, it's a calculation you should do yourself and not rely on the onboard for accurate results. I'd expect your milage to be better.

My average has been accurate to within .5-.7 mpg, so I'd say the dash is fairly accurate.

Your mileage should be much higher than it is, unless you're stopping or idling more than you think you are.

My 328, for example, averages 20 in town with moderate to heavy traffic and frequent stopping, and 24 combined city/highway. My temps lately have been very cold, between 10-30 degrees, and my trips are 5-6 miles each.

Drove about 25 miles today and it was around 28-30. Mostly highway and freeway but like maybe 10 miles city. Maybe the earlier 18 miles was just a fluke or something idk, but I think that sounds better ha. Thanks!

I drive 90% city (Los Angeles) and 10% freeway also in LA....I get 18.5 mpg. Imagine that.

Also 90% city in central Texas. Drive maybe 10 miles max for those trips.

Mpg will be usually 17-20 with a mix of longer frontage roads and shorter light to light driving

Though driving on I-35 with stop and go traffic will be around 25

This is on stage 2 bm3
