Thinking about going from an E90 328 to a F30 340

I brought my E90 3 years ago ( I was 20 and this was my first car/huge purchase) when it had 67k miles on it from the first owner. Sitting at close to 77k miles right now.

I've been thinking about pulling the trigger on an F30 340 since from what I've been reading, the B58 is pretty much bulletproof (except for the normal BMW oil leaks). Just like the N52. I kind of want to get into something new. Nothing wrong with my current car. But it's 13 years old. So, coolant systems going to start going out, suspension components are going to start going out etc.

I haven't driven one yet since I am out of town and won't be in town until March 1st. I've got a few 340s on the list that I want to take a look at.

My main thing is, will I regret selling my E90 for the 340? Obviously, there's going to be a huge difference in technology compared to the E90. and power. From what I've been reading, steering feel is much more "soft" and not so sporty compared to the E90. Interior material also lack? A lot of plastic used??

Just want to hear things from current 340 owners. Any help/insight would be appreciated.

I went to a 2 series from a 330 e90 for similar reasons. There's pros and cons of course.

The B58 power bump is obviously is very noticeable and mostly wasted if you're doing strictly city driving. Fuel economy is actually the same if not slightly better than the N52. The tech stuff is fine if you're into that but if you need the latest and greatest, you need a G chassis.

I don't like or dislike the interior, it's been solid so far.

The biggest con I can think of is the electric steering mostly because there is no simple fix. Next in my opinion being suspension which is fixable. It handles well but is made softer than previous generations.

Also, if you can find a deal that's great. But it's a terrible time for car shopping. I picked mine up in early 2021 before the local market decided to tack on another $10k for no apparent reason.

I currently have a E92 N54 and a F30 B58 both xdrive.
As for power/pull I like the of the N54 more; you just feel the power throughout the RPM where as the B58 you have to be above 3500 to really feel it. You on the other hand will love the Power of the B58.

Also another big thing is going from 6 gears to 8. You'll get use to it.

For the steering - Yes it is lighter, but in Sport it's not bad; at lest you're driving a BMW and not a Lexus.

I don't think you are got to regret getting a 340i.
Just make sure you get the car (with options) you want and will be happy with. (don't get a base if you want a M sport thinking you will upgrade cuz it will take you a while)

It took me over a year to find my current F30.

Also at the age of 23/24 I would check and see how much your insurance will go up. this will paly a big roll in your monthly payments + ins.

Insurance on the E90 is on my dads. I pay my half. So, insurance on the F30 will go on my dad's name. I'll pay my half. Until I turn 25.

The F30s I'm looking at, only 1 is the non M packaged one. The others have the M package.

I've just never had payments, so idk how I feel about having a roughly $700's payment. I mean, it'll only be for 3 years. Only reason I'm leaning towards 3 years is because it's 0.9% financing on CPO. But, that expires today. Hopefully, next month incentives are better or the same

Looking back at my 20's, I would not get a car that results in $700 a month plus insurance. My 328 I paid 17k and it was around 350 a month which was more reasonable. But it's your finances and plan to put money into a savings account.

I've got money saved. I could go a longer term but interest rates jumps. I'm putting $15k down. More than 20%

Technically 2k. Got a buyer at $13k for my E90

700's for 3 years though. Not 5 or 6 years

Good amount for the E90. When I sold my E46 I didn't get much. Put that towards the F30. Enjoy the car man, I'm jelly of 340's

I'm gonna go drive a 340 this afternoon when I get home from the airport 😂.

If I like the way it drives and the fit and finish is nice, I'll move forward with selling my car. The guy gave me a deposit so we're good.

If I don't for some reason like the F30, or the payments scare me, I'll refund the $500 deposit and keep the E90

Fixed, should already know if you can handle 700/mo so it's the matter of liking the car

Yup. For some odd reason I don't want to sell my E90. Maybe because it was Mt first car and I've got some sort of attachment

I started with an E46 14 yrs ago. Went to an 2011 E90 335i (last year of the E90) and until it started giving me probs after six years ownership/150K miles, I was pretty happy with it. Went to an E92 335is for about 18mos before I settled into my 2016 340i. The steering was the biggest shock for me (aside from the slight size increase) which felt soft. But as soon as I put in the Eibach lowering springs (now H&R SuperSport), the steering tightened up to where it felt much more like the E90. And the fact that I had the Adaptive Suspension, that makes it even better because that will tighten up the steering and suspension even more for curves with the push of a button.

I loved my E90 but I've been pretty happy with the F30. The only thing IMO that the F30 cannot beat the E90 in is the fact that the E90 had a much more aggressive look to it, even stock (with the Sport Pkg), but then, that's a personal opinion. But the Pros of the F30 (being newer in every sense) far outweigh the Pros of the E90.

Just my two cents. Hope it helps...

Well, I test drove this 18 340 with 32k on it today. Man this things a beast. Guys picking up my E90 Thursday.

Doesn't have apple car play or android auto? I thought that was standard?

Also, I noticed a rattling noise when I first started it. But once warm, it went away. Not sure what that was.

Asking price is $41,826. I know the sales manager so I am hoping he'll cut me some slack.

CPO xdrive. I'm gonna try to get them down to 39k. It's got new tires, wheels refinished, windshield replaced etc.

It's got the HUD, Navigation backup camera, front and rear backup sensors, M-sport Package power trunk, blind spot, lane keep assist etc. Heat seats. No apple car play or android auto though. Thought that was standard?

I would agree with this, but then, the used car market is insane right now so when I did a quick check on KBB, $39K seemed to be the median price for good condition 340i. That really is crazy since I got my 2016 two years ago (so same situation/scenario) for about $26k with 30K miles.

Do your research on price & packages before you start talking $$ with them would be my only bit of advice. And hopefully it's CPO so you'll be good for at least a couple of years.

check the build sheet and see if says Apple CarPlay Combability; I also think you have at lest 6NW

If you have all hardware you should be able to activate it over the air in the idrve

Yes the market is crazy. And the price at 39k is about right for a xdrive

But there are still cars out there in that price range with 1/2 of the miles. Me i would pay a little more with less miles and options.

https://www.bmwusa.com/certified-pre...8B7C51JA586097

https://www.bmwusa.com/certified-pre...8B7C51JA938059

When I was looking; one dealer would not even knock off $100 of list price even for me to drive 4hrs a way to pick it up. Punks would also not give me $500 off in loyalty credit.

Also if you are buying from a BMW Dealer - Always ask the sales man for a Hat at or something out of their shop. Every car I've bought from them they always give me a few things from the shop.

I went from an E46 to an F30 340. Very happy to this day. I put the mppsk on it and a few minor things. Has been great for 4 years and 50k miles.

Here's the thing. Online price doesn't mean much nowadays. It can show $43,990 but when you go there they'll jack the price up another $3k with "protection packages" and stuff. That's why I don't really want to go out of state to buy one.

I can ask for a bill of sale, but technically they don't have to list the dealer add-on on it since it's not official. I don't want to drive 4 hours away and have to drive back because of B.S. you know?
