If anyone is a *nix software geek, check out what kind of file the update .bin is, and what's inside.
Out of respect for BMW and the software license agreement I won't say much more than that, but the payload of the update is pretty easily inspectable, and makes me like this nav system even more. I will say it's definitely an Intel x86 architecture. |

Nice find! I will update later tonight.
Can some remind me, what formatting needs to be used for the USB stick? You sure you can't tell us more about what's in the bin? Maybe PM me? |

I downloaded and upgraded the software yesterday. I put the bin file in the root directory of the BMW USB stick I got when I purchased the car and inserted it into the USB port under the arm rest.
I also used tar and rpm2cpio to extract the contents of the update. The update contains changes to bluetooth and the mediaserver components. And yes, they are i386: [root@arthur bin]# file Connectivity Connectivity: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped |

Thanks for the heads-up. I wish you could register and get an email when these are posted.
Anyway, installed now and no issues so far -- haven't noticed anything new but hopefully the bluetooth internet tethering in BMW Live is a bit more reliable.

Got the chance to test my car today and they have certainly fixed some problems with iPhone connectivity via USB that I had before.
If you are wondering what's in the bin file, here is a listing of all the filenames: /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004 /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/info /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/info/manifest_SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004.xml /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/info/manifest_SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004.xml.sign /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/bin /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/bin/MediaPreStarter /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/bin/NBTMediaEjectRetractApp /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/bin/PrepareMedia /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/bin/persistTraceNBTMediaMainApp.bin /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/bin/zipped /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/bin/zipped/NBTMediaMainApp /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/etc /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/etc/mme.conf /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/etc/mme_without_gracenote.conf /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/etc/mmlauncher_B069.cfg /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/etc/mmlauncher_B069_without_gracenote.cfg /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/etc/mmlauncher_B075.cfg /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/etc/sql /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/etc/sql/mme_custom.sql /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/etc/update /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B0_001_023_004/opt/mm/etc/update/mm_custom_migration.sh /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002 /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/info /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/info/manifest_SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002.xml /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/info/manifest_SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002.xml.sign /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/bin /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/bin/ConnStarter /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/bin/Connectivity /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/data /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/data/ConfigGen_Options.ini /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/data/label.txt /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/data/persistTraceConnStarter.bin /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/data/persistTraceConnectivity.bin /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/etc /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/etc/FwImage /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/etc/FwImage/sd8688_ap.bin /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/lib /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/lib/libmediaservice.so /fs/sda0/repository/SWUP_000014B1_001_023_002/opt/conn/lib/libpal_bt.so |

Here are the release notes: http://www.bmw.com/_common/shared/ow...D05004_ENG.pdf I did the updated (you need FAT32 formatted USB), and notice slightly improved times for Bluetooth phone pairing with the car. No other noticeable improvements, but I wasn't having any problems to begin with. Still no ability to have streaming app audio override iPod playback when iPhone is connected via USB. If you've started iPhone/iPod playback, you'll need to disconnect the Lightning cable, then reconnect, then launch your app (Spotify, Live365, etc). Not too much of an inconvenience. Everything is now working to my satisfaction. |

i386 is just the RPM's architecture. ELF binaries don't mark the variant of x86 any more detailed than that either. Since the OS running on it is not exactly Linux, I expect they just picked i386 arbitrarily for their RPM architecture.

After a few days of usin the updated version it seems like Bluetooth internet tethering via the iPhone is much more reliable, in fact no failures since the update.

Yes, the Internet browser and BMW Live (weather, news, etc) use the iPhones data connection.

Anybody have their VIN rejected? I've downloaded 2 updates in the past and now it says "invalid VIN".
