As mentioned, I think these only come on models with the electric hand brake. I use it in my father in laws X5 and I like it (just not for parking).
With the 3/4, they have start stop and in order to activate it, you need to be on the brakes anyway or in park which nullifies the need for the car braking itself. Also, as mentioned they come with the hill assist so BMW probably decided there was no real gain in adding auto hold for the 3/4

On my Auto, F36 with manual handbrake, if I come to a stop on a hill and release the footbrake, the car will automatically hold itself on the brakes for a second or two then release. This stops the car rolling back on a steep slope when moving your foot from brake to gas. It's only apparent on steep slopes because the auto gearbox will creep forward and this is usually sufficient to hold you on a slight incline. In addition, most won't notice it because the tendency is to stop with foot on brake then move foot to gas when driving off and you can do this quickly and easily. |

As previously said, Auto Hold is a feature only on models with Electronic Handbrake and its excellent. Brake to a halt and it comes on, press the accelerator and it releases, nothing else to do. The wife's X3 has it, as does the X5 loaner I've got to give back next week.

Thanks JustChris and Scottiedog
Another stupid question. Would automatic gear boxes have hill assist cover times where you move your foot from the brake to accelerator pedal? Or is this the magic of a non DCT which always has some torque when you lift off the brake and therefore only work up to certain gradients of hills? |

The ZF 8AT boxes don't need it really but might have it as they creep.
