Are you able to replicate? If car is in ready mode and you open the door what happens?

Think I have to stick with my original theory. You left engine on and locked the doors without realizing it. Dont worry it happens. The other day I left all my windows down and I didn't realize till the next day. oh well

Actually mine is the key still in the ignition chime, not related to the engine status. But that's how i'd expect it to work here.
Maybe the car is possessed .. |

Plus it still goes off even when engine is off but car is on. I think most of us leaves the car while its on (ACC) and engine off ignore the chimes and arm on look back (damn she is sexy) press lock button.

I've had the same thing happen to me. Pulled into supermarket parking bay. A.S.S kicked in. Put it in P, got out and locked the car. The radio turned off when the car locked as usual. So I thought nothing of it.
I returned about 40 minutes later to find the engine running! I've not managed to replicate the fault, but normally the needle goes from ready to off as soon as you open the car door. Very strange. Mine was delivered to me in early Feb so was probably one of the first in the UK. 320d luxury with sport automatic. |

That happened to me once the first week I got it.
Went to Lowes and the car turned off! someone I locked, it beeped and my family and I went inside! It took about an hour and half, when we went outside and opened the trunk I didn't head the car on, but I saw the Navi on from behind, we went in and the car was freaking cold! LOL, but yes, I was very upset and I don't know how the car turned on by itself... That was really weird.. anyone could have taken it for a spin... oh and yes, the car was unlocked!!! |

Now with pictures
FWIW, this happened to me this last weekend - car fully locked, mirrors folded, key inside with me and neighbour came over to say my car was running, which it was. Found this thread which made me glad as obviously it's not just my car. Then came in to work this morning and parked up next to another 320d ED and guess what - it was running, fully locked up as well. I've attached some photos I took of it, you can clearly see it's all locked up and yet idling away.
I suspect the diagnosis on here is correct - you pull up and ASS turns of the engine, you may or may not push the stop button (I normally do to make sure the audio, etc is off) but it doesn't actually deactivate. Then it starts the car again later to circulate air, etc. Major failing of the system to not re-detect the key or the lock state of the car... |

Seems kind of counter-intuitive in saving gas if your car cuts on when not occupied. All that gas "saved" stopping and starting is wiped out when this happens. Nice stab at fuel efficiency BMW. But try again.

That has happened to me before but a warning will show up on the instrument cluster saying "Warning! Ignition is still on!" and it will have the Auto Start Stop icon there.
I'm surprised you didn't get this warning when you opened the door. Maybe it's a European F30 thing. |

I was told that with comfort access or keyless start, if someone steals your BMW while it's running and you have the key, the car will power down and lock out the thief from accessing any of the electronics after it's been driven 50 feet from the key.

Maybe not. It literally says "driver's door open" in the first condition (which is really a combination of two conditions involving the seat belt and the driver's door). In your case, you closed the driver's door again. You've been punk'd. (I realize this might not be so funny if the car runs in a closed, attached garage, spreading CO into someone's house.)

Utter nonsense. There is no electronic detection system for thieves. Once started, the car will run as far and as long without the key inside as the fuel holds out.

When that happens, get out, close the door and lock it, and then peek inside to see whether the state is "off" or "ready" with the door closed and locked.

One day I'll bet they'll be able to create an opening where the fob sits in. That way we'll know when the fob is in the car. Connect the fob to a system, like, turning the fob to start the car and turn the other way to stop it, then remove the fob and you know the car is OFF. Put the fob in your pocket, then the car can't be started without it. They can call it a "key", just like the key that opens and locks door, cabinets, etc... But, I'm sure they will charge extra for that, and/or include it in a "premium pkg." |

This is a lot more serious than most seem to be seeing it. Someone observed a page back that the CO from a running car in your garage could kill you. That very thing killed our neighbors when I was growing up - brand new car that started "dieseling" after they closed the garage door and went to bed. Both dead the next morning. This needs to be ABSOLUTELY addressed by BMW. I'm calling customer service first thing in the morning. This is as big a deal as "my car occasionally bursts into flames and squirts gasoline on the walls from the headlight washers".
