Where to mount anti-deer warning whistle?
I just moved to a deer ridden neighborhood. So... many... deer. I've almost already hit one. And single / lane twisty hilly roads. Yuck.
I'm looking to get one of those $5 deer whistles. Does anyone have one? Where would I best mount them on my F30 sedan? Thanks. |

I think you will find that it will be equally effective if you mount it in the center of the roof, in the center of the hood or under the front seat.

i would imagine somewhere behind the kidney grills where there is ample air to flow through the whistle but remain hidden.
if not then perhaps mounted to the FMIC on the sides. both locations should be adequate.

Lot's of controversy on the effectiveness of these things - try Google to read up on them.
Having hit a deer on my Harley a few years ago, I'd probably get one if I still had it(Harley is gone). |

I've hit a deer before and always been wondering what's the best defense against these things.

If you really want to make an impact, use a 30-06, but a .223 works too. Deer meat tastes good. So does rabbit and squirrel, but only following the first frost.

Most of these claim to operate in the region above the range of human hearing. That's fine if you're trying to repel dogs, but the frequency range of hearing for deer is similar to that of human beings, so if you can't hear it neither will deer. Moose are worse. They have no natural enemies, so they don't fear anything and will ignore any noises and go wherever they please.

Need more than a .223 to bag a moose for sure.

A 30-06 head shot does the trick, but they're so stupid that they don't know when they're dead, so you've still got to hit them upside the head with a good size boulder to get them to fall.

Wait for a speedy rabbit, then follow him. Solves two problems, especially if you don't have a radar detector either.. (But stay close - those fast white tail ditch jumpers don't need much of a space interval)

Over the course of 1 million + miles of driving, I have hit approx 15 deer (lots of trips from Eureka CA to San Fran on the 101 at night) .. At hit #10 or so I decided to try one of those deer whistle things and though I never hit a deer with the car equipped with the deer whistle, I would consistently see deer on the side of the road that seemed unphased by the whistle. They would just stand there on the side of the road and look at my lights, just like they would do if they were in the middle of the road. I have since started using my horn every so often when I'm in a known area where there are a lot of deer... your neighbors probably wouldn't appreciate that, though.

Hell, if the OP tells me what city he lives in, I'll just come take care of some of the issue later this fall.
I promise to not bring my rifles. Nope, I'll just come up yonder during bow season. After we get a couple of them processed, I'll soak you some meat in buttermilk and leave a few recipes. Would also drop off some sausage or have it shipped to you with a card that says "Organic, Right out of your own Backyard!" Yep, seems like your woodland critter population has gotten a bit out of control. Bet there are some good size bucks up there too.

They're not the sharpest tacks in the drawer. In Montana I was at the top of one of their spectacular rolling hills doing about 80 on the interstate. I saw a small herd of mule deer on the highway at the bottom of the hill trough, which was probably 5 miles off (you'd have to have been to Montana to know how that's possible and understand how it got it's name as the Big Sky country). At about a mile away I started slowing down, giving occasional horn blasts. They didn't move. At 200 yards I laid hard on the horn, they still didn't move. I ended up slowing to a crawl and practically had to push them out of the way when I reached them. I wasn't in a little car either, I was in a full sized van. Its presence didn't faze them a bit.
