I assume you mean neutral? You can press the start button once, and then with the foot on break shift into neutral. Or there's a manual way to do it if the car is broken down, this process is a little more complicated though

Assuming you want to be able to roll it somewhere. The only thing I have done is start the car, put it in neutral and then shut it off. I wanted to test it for something, rolling and motor off.

Yes you have to put it in neutral with the engine running and then press the button to turn off the engine once. The car still is on as turning it off completely will cause it to shift into park. If you want to put it in neutral for towing you have to use a wrench and turn a bolt under the car to get it to stay in neutral or to shift into neutral manually. The car will shift into park by itself after 20 minutes if you use the first method but will stay in neutral if you use the second method.

I'll tell you--I had a rattle sound at low speeds that I was trying to pinpoint. So to rule out any moving or engine or transmission parts I wanted to roll the car with it off to rule that out. I had a feeling it was suspension but wanted to see if there was any difference with the car off.
I was in an empty parking lot and drove about 10mph, put it in neutral and turned the car off. The sound was still there. It ended up being a bad front strut.

I'm catless and just about straight pipped. So I wanted to roll it out of my driveway before starting it because the cold starts get annoying to some.

What car do you have? I have a similar sound but can't tell if I'm just imaging things lol!

13 335i. If you hear it, it is there. There are a lot of things that can make rattle sounds--I spent months trying to figure it out and finally narrowed it down to the spring/strut and took it to the dealer. Because of my mods, they wouldn't diagnose at first saying it could be my CP.
