My 440ix B58 is at BMW dealer now, as they insisted coolant loss is not a normal thing on any car. As no leak could be found and pressure OK, BMW is gonna check and replace the turbocharger. According to them several cases of unexplained coolant loss reported in Germany and Belgium, all solved by replacing turbocharger.
My car has 16000 miles. All costs incl loaner on BMW account (warranty). I keep you informed, as it looks like several B58 owners have the low coolant issue. |

It really is weird. I could imagine the turbo leaking or contributing to burning coolant, but if that's the case then the pressure test should have failed.

Turboloader changed yesterday on warranty after low coolant message at 12k miles. According to the mechanics, turbo was leaking coolant water, but only internally, that's why no water leakage under the car. Water evacuated through exhaust pipe. Although the leak was very small.
Dealer also said it's a known issue on B58 2016 production. I check in 2000 miles if level still at max... |

Not if the leak was slight. Keep in mind that the ethylene glycol would be diluted by the water of the exhaust, as well as being boiled off by the heat.

So it remains to be seen. My car is a April 2017 manufacture date. Either they all are leaking at the turbos or are getting underfilled at the factory. I only have 2300 miles on my car and it's the first time I looked. |

I'm leaning to it being an early B58 issue as @bayern68 said.

i wouldn't consider it early issue at this point. my car was a July '18 build. that's over a year in production.

Mine is a 440i GC March 2017 build and had the light come on at 15,000 miles.
I was near the dealer, and I'd just had a free health check when I put my winters on that didn't mention it, so I just took it straight in to them to check. They took it in and brought it back out pretty quickly saying that the levels were fine and the light must have been an error. It had gone off when I arrived with them, just came on the first time I started the car in the morning. 4 days later it came on again. I checked myself this time, main reservoir looked empty and smaller one low. I topped it up myself. Couldn't be bothered to say anything to dealer, although now I've read this thread I might. |

Im at 27k miles, light came on maybe 10k miles ago, I checked the coolant level and it was at max. So I brought it in, they said its not a problem and that it shouldnt come back. Well its back... So I will be taking it in once again.

I should have known I would leave my first dealership experience annoyed, but TL/DR: They overfilled both reservoirs and sent me on my way.
Scenario I tried to get to the dealer early so I could leave the car outside to cool off for a bit before they brought it in, but my newborn pretty much made the decision for me that I was going to get there after they opened. In hindsight, I should have waited in the car 15-20min so I would know it's cooled off, so my mistake there. Anyway, I parked outside with the hood up and walked inside to explain the situation, and they insisted that I just bring it in and they'll top it off right then. Apparently everyone else that actually had appointments at opening time hadn't showed yet, and they knew they were going to get really busy when a bunch of people showed up at once. So i let them bring it in, watched them wince and jump at trying to open the reservoir while the engine was still hot and steam was coming out, but finally they got it open after it cooled down slightly and pressure was relieved. I then saw the tech pouring coolant in both reservoirs. I explained that only the large tank was low, but he insisted that it was actually the small tank that was low because "i can still see coolant circulating in the large tank." Probably not the best time to measure coolant levels, eh? So I stopped him but of course it was too late. The funny thing was the SA also insisted that my coolant loss may come from blowing past the "pressure relief valve" (pointing to the bleed screw on the reservoir), but "it's normal because twin power engines run hot." They did however insist that if it dropped again, they would do an inspection for leaks under warranty. Just not sure how i feel about their competency after this ordeal. Current coolant levels as follows: Large Reservoir Small Reservoir |

Had this on my X3 (2012); turned out to be a junk recovery/expansion tank. The cap wouldn't even be tight- a 2yr old could turn it at any time. Pressure/vapor would blow right past the cap and keep triggering the low coolant light. Just had it fixed under CPO coverage.....(thank you Pacific BMW!).

I just got this today on my 2016 340ix, lucky me.
SA built 11/15. It now has 11,784 miles. I looked at the reservoirs, the main one is below Low, the smaller one - the turbo’s? - is also just below the Low tab, but still contacting it. Will call SA tomorrow. |

Do the caps on the reservoirs require a particular torque when screwing them on? I've seen people comment about loose or faulty caps... I've not checked my coolants levels (August 2017 SA build) but would like to.
