Should I change my F30 to a 2-series BMW?
I got a 2 year old F30 320i with 35k km on it.
Is it a good idea to sell it and buy a new 220 series coupe or 320 series? I heard that with the same price, 2-series has cheaper stuff, like no electric seats. So is the car worth it? I am single, so I don't really need a 4-seat. 2-series wasn't on sell when I bought my 3-series but I don't know if the 2-series is really worth it over a 3 series. I had been pretty satisfied with the 3 series, but I had always liked coupe versions more but I don't have the money for a 4-series. What do you think? Personally, I would stick with 3. My wife really wanted the M2, but the timing was bad and we couldn't wait. We're kinda happy though, because the M2 doesn't look quite as cool as it did in our minds.
Now that said, a "regular" 2 is probably fun to drive. You can outfit it with lots of "sporty" accessories like carbon fiber exhaust tips right from BMW. Like many Bimmers you can load them or strip them, so consider that a base 3 might feel slightly nicer than a base 2, but to make either feel really nice you have to spend cash. You can get a 3 close to 30K or drive it up to 60K. The 2 is similar. Most lay people will see a 2 as a "cheap" BMW, so be realistic about if part of the sale is the appearence you convey. (Not saying it is or isn't for you!) |

the 3 and 2 have a different feel. The 2 will likely feel a bit more sporty. I would simply drive one to find out if you like ti or not.

The 2-series is a smaller more agile car without a doubt.
That being said, if you are happy with your current car what is motivating you to change to something else? |

I sat in the 2 before deciding on the 4. It felt surprisingly cramped.

Never been a big fan of the 2-series appearance. It's too "cute". Much improved over the 1-series, to be sure, but the proportions (especially the rear end) and the tail lights don't look quite right to me. That said, they handle quite well.

2 series vs. 320i
Six months ago I was planning to buy a 228i because I always felt the 3 series had grown too big and, like you, I did not really need a 5 seater. But, while I prefer the 2 series in terms of size, I like the 3 series design better, and in the end I opted for a 320i with the sport package. The cost and equipment level were similar but I gave up the higher output engine (60 hp). I picked my car up in Munich in September (European Delivery) and my first reaction was that I was glad I picked the 320i over the 228i. Still I have not received my car back home so my experience living with it is limited. I think it boils down to your personal preference and priorities and you can't go wrong with either.

I made the change from a 3 to a 2. It's really on a different level. The 2 is much more responsive and the car definitely is sportier. The flip side is you give up some space and some refinement. The 2 is a more raw experience.
My 2 cents. |
