Time to start thinking of selling on my 3!!!

Well after years of waiting had the call from the dealer that my new steed has arrived. Went down to see him yesterday and must admit can't wait to get him on the road.

Which means that I've now got to think what to do with my current 3. Toying between trading in for convenience and selling on myself but not sure if I really want the hassle etc.

Never sold on privately before any one had any experiences?? Good bad amusing etc.

Amusing. People want something for nothing.

Get a PX price and as long as you get above that you are quids in

I made 1k more on my E92 selling private than the dealer price. Although I had another car to use so I had it up for sale 1 month before delivery.

I've always sold mine privately as got a good couple of grand more than a px.

Always used autotrader, very simple. Put in lots of pics which helps and don't be greedy with price but e.g if you put up for £20k then their bid will be 18 and you'll agree on 19 so build in a cushion to what you would really accept.

You will get canvassers saying they have a buyer for you if you pay them 50quid
It's bollocks of course.

Obvious other things. Let people come to you, don't meet in a car park. If it's a lot of money, get them to do a bank transfer. Bankers drafts can be forged. And don't leave them in the car with engine running, very easy to do with the new keys.

Sell privately. I've always made at least £1k more than trading in.

Good advice above which I would echo.

I always start early with a slightly silly price and then reduce after a week. You can tell by the number of enquiries when you're in the right ballpark for what you're car is worth.

You will get more selling it privately, but it can take a while, especially this time of year!

So you do have to consider the extra costs of advertising and really you need to keep the car insured for potential buyers to have test drives & in case it gets stolen.

And of course there's the hassle.

I sold a Z4 in less than 3 weeks in November... There is always people buying cars.

Advertising costs £50. And insurance cd for an extra month is what.. £50.

I sold the Z4 for almost £2k more than the trade in offer.

However I've always sold cars that are attractive used buys... Great condition and spec. If your car is run if the mill or needing some tlc then maybe better to trade in.

Clearly it's a bit more hassle but it's hardly hard work and it saves a lot of money.

But then I'd never fit my own springs so each to their own!

How much was your Z4 for sale for?

I guess the OP's is going to be well in excess of £20k which will make it harder to sell.

Also Z4's are much rarer than 3 series'

Sold it for £16k.
You're right that there are less cash car buyers for more expensive cars....

My mate struggled to get a buyer for his 2 year old Boxster at £38k, but still eventually sold it for about £3k more than a dealer would offer him.

However you can get independently arranged finance for buying a private car.

Thanks for all the good advice everyone. Think I might try the private route as I've got till the end of feb until I pick up my new car and if I do sell for a decent enough price can always use my classic as a daily drive, but don't really want to or rent a cheese block for a few quid a day.

Price wise I was thinking well below the £20k mark or am igoing too cheap !!! It's a 320 d sport not an m- sport but got a few desirables like leather and 19 rims etc. But is in excellent condition

Only thing puts me off and that's the idiots and test pilots that will turn up. Not forgetting the calls from the canvassers

Oh well no pain no gain. Anyone ever tried on here or is it not allowed ??

Is that unique viewers of just the number of visits? Big difference!

But also, people on this forum mostly have a 3 series already, so aren't looking to buy. And if they read the forum for more than a week they will usually want to go buy a brand new 335d/330d/335/4 series/Gof R and not a 320d!

To be honest, in all my time selling my cars privately I've never had a single timewaster turn up. You may get a few calls, or some emails from folk with silly offers, but they don't take up much time.

And please don't take this the wrong way, but if you're a "test pilot" looking to have a drive of a car that you don't want to buy, just for a lauch, why would it be a 320d? Surely you'd go try something a bit more interesting?

I didn't get a single canvasser the last two times I've sold.

I sell at least 2 cars a year privately between myself and family. Usually you would find if your car is well specced and in good condition it would sell itself effortlessly.

People do expect the car to be in 10/10 condition with any hiccups can mess up the sale.

You rarely get people who turn up and are not serious buyers specially if you're not dealing with cars that are £5k or less. My worst experience, having a flight attendant (male) when you really expecting them to be women, and he was a woman, he wanted to try the car in town, in motorways then when we got back from the test drive he said am flying away for two weeks when I get back, I will bring my cousin to see the car! Focking time waster

Ignore withheld numbers.
