Is this normal AT behavior
Hey everyone.
I've had my doubts about the AT on my car; I always felt it wasn't working properly. Like when I accelerate from a stop at it almost always engage abruptly or the is a slight hesitation after acceleration. I would like to comfirm something with others with the 8AT, preferably the 328s. I had noticed that whyle standing on the prake and putting in drive would load the drivetrain. Same in reverse. Today I tried this: Stand on the prake with good pressure the while holding the engage button(to go from park to drive) quickly go from Drive to reverse to drive and so on. It sometimes will hit hard, like bumping another car at low speed. Does anybody else have that behavior? Thanks.

The drivetrain should load when you put it into D or R. As for abrupt shifting into D and then into R, I wouldn't do it. It's not healthy for the transmission to be shifted into R before it is done fully engaging D. Doing it many times on any car will result in an occasional bang. If you don't believe me, go out and try doing it a dozen times
We like to think that the ZF 8AT on this car is something magical but in the end it is an auto tranny and works like every other one out there. |

On a slightly different but related note, when I stop the car quickly (say get into a parking spot) and then hit the park button quickly before really giving the Drive mode a couple of seconds wait time, I get a slight clunky/jerky feel when Park mode is engaged. If I let the car sit for a couple seconds after stopping then the Park mode is smooth as butter.

My 328 exhibits the thump going into park then the car rocks when releasing my foot from break. The break pedal makes thump noise when releasing foot fast and I can wiggle the brake with hand feels loose. I have another observation on the AT transmission- when I accelerate quickly and then let up on the gas quickly - the transmission whines whines as though it was down shifted from 5th gear to 1st. Not sure if it's normal but don't like it

Ok, so it's just how the transmission is I guess. It's my first AT and I'm not impressed; I could be smoother with my 335's MT.

I got the same problem when shifting from D to R or vice versa . However wait a couple of seconds after complete stop and it should disappear.
My car is a 320 and has less than 500 miles on it. |

very smooth acceleration on my 428's 8at. changing from drive to reverse (and vice versa) is near instant and doesn't jerk.
not going to do the rapid D->R->D test because it's irrelevant and potentially dangerous for the gearbox. overall a much better transmission than the DSG in my previous car (vw golf R) |
