There is no such thing as "the best winter tire", since winter tires are all about making compromises between: - dry traction - wet traction - ice traction - snow traction (and other things like wear resistance, road noise, cost, etc) However, even big cities like Toronto may have side roads which remain unplowed for days after a big storm. Also, even plowed/salted roads can develop black ice after a thaw-refreeze cycle. I debated between "performance winter tires" and "snow/ice winter tires" a few years ago when I got my E90 335xi, and ended up choosing a "snow/ice" set (Conti ExtremeWinterContact). Those who want to learn more about winter tires may find this article helpful: Car and Driver Winter Tire Comparison Test (Dec 2009): http://www.caranddriver.com/comparis...mparison-tests Also, I know of at least 2 comparison tests done by TireRack (both times on BMWs, interestingly): Comparison Test #1 (between 3 snow/ice winter tires and 1 performance variety, on a 2008 E92 328i Coupe): http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...y.jsp?ttid=125 Comparison Test #2 (between 4 different snow/ice winter tires, on a 2012 F30 328i): http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...y.jsp?ttid=167 Quote:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/...y.jsp?ttid=125 (Click on "Test Result Charts" or "Spider Charts" to see the actual data) In the end, ANY winter tire will perform better in cold weather (<7 degrees C) than even the best all-season tire, and no tire in the world can stop a reckless driver from ending up in a ditch, so choose your product wisely and drive safely.

i love that...doing "fine". $70,000 car.....whats another $1200? You are going to go through 2 sets of tires at some point so just do it properly and make one set winters. AWD masks a/s tire performance by giving you great acceleration making you think they are "Fine" in the winter. Put them on a RWD car and the difference is night and day. They don't stop or corner very well compared to winters.

All this talk of tires. Thanks for all this info. Very helpful. Anyone have any recommendations for a nice set of 18 winter rims for my 335 performance edition that will look as nice as the 20 M performance rims this car comes with for summer ? What do people suggest? Thanks.

not sure what's your budget ?
You can check out the VMR wheels. cast wheels, fairly decent quality, Asian (Taiwan) made, nice design. Probably about $1000 for the set (wheels only). But most will try to spend as little as possible by going with replicas, lots of choices & looks, Chinese Made, cast wheels, hit&miss quality. Probably about $700 range for the set (wheels only) There are couple of reputable shops out there with decent & fair pricings. Simply tires & Tires23 Quote:

Replica Rims - Simply Tire?
Hi guys - trying to figure out which package to pick from Simply tire. I have heard a lot about cheap rims (bending, warping, etc). Are these rim's that Simply tire sell good quality.
Also - I had Dunlop Wintersport 3d tires before but they don't seem to be an option. Is there an overwhelming favorite amongst these choices? |

Basically, they are hit & miss as they are normally made in China where the quality control is questionable. That's why they are cheap.
Other shops basically sell the same thing, more or less with similar or more selections of styles but they all come from the few distributors. In general, if you encounter any issue with the first little while with them, Simply tires will usually try to resolve the matter with you ASAP. That's one of the reason why they are pretty reputable and lots of people go there for their decent & fair pricing. Since wheels are very personal to some, it's hard for me to tell others what to buy as the costs may not fit the person's budget. Therefore, just take your time and visit a few shops to get the quotes and ask questions. Alternatively, since you have so much time to look for wheels, why not search on this thread to see who wants to sell their oem stock wheels, perhaps, you may be able to find a good set that is not used a whole lot. I put a set of Gislaved's on my wife's CR-V, and they were amazing tires for the price. Just as good, or better than anything else I've tried in snow and ice.
However, they are not a Winter "performance" tire, so what was acceptable on a CR-V, might be a bit of a handling compromise on a 335. But for the $, you can't beat em. |

I live in Aurora, and have LM60's. They were fantastic last Winter. Couldn't have been happier with their snow and ice traction, as well as their manners on dry pavement. I do drive a lot of highway, but also local. |
