No, as previously stated, these software upgrades come with the new hardware upgrades.

It's always been called Navigation Professional, what's described here is the "new" or "Next Generation" Navigation Professional.

nothing to be proud of.....

..sure, it's a technological feat, but if i wanted to go online or compute, i'd do it in the office or at a cafe, on my smart phone or iPad or laptop. I use my car to drive. This extra nonsense just adds more cost, weight, and creates more distractions from the original purpose of these vehicles. I know I'm sounding like "an old techno-hating old dude" but i just can't help feeling annoyed by these announcements.

....I'm not against navigation, but tell you the truth, this stuff (software and hardware) becomes obsolete so quickly that it would be better as a third party add-on feature rather than hard-coded by the manufacturer, imho at least....

This is all pretty cool stuff. The really like the LTE Hotspot...very useful for passengers in the car to stay connected.

Regarding the release of the integration SDK, I'm curious as to how this specifically relates to the newer professional navigation system. Doesn't this just further extend the applicable "BMW Apps" to other services/third party applications? Seems like this is also a benefit to those of us that will have the older, existing CIC navigation system. Am I missing something?

It's all about making money, all about an app store for your car. This new Dragon Voice is a 30 day free trial, then you have to pay a monthly fee.

About the only thing I'd really, really want is Garmin's navigation OS up on the BMW LCD screen but they'll never let that happen as it'll be a $20 app with revenue to Garmin and a negative $1500 for what BMW charges for its stock system.

I could see some $15,000 starter kid car for the 18 year olds having this type of app availability and customization, but a $50,000 luxury car has an older audience that isn't this tech-savvy and isn't going to spend $1 on a clock because they won't be able to figure out how to download and install it.

It's like back in 2009 some engineer at BMW was ordered to "get on top of this phone app thing" and here years later they're launching it. Not too excited.

Anyone who owns a $50,000 luxury car already has internet access on their mobile devices and a family share plan to boot so who is going to pay for a hotspot accessory?

If this were being marketed to minivan owners, if Honda was doing this to give the kids in the back wi-fi, maybe I could see it. BMW makes four-passenger luxury sedans for wealthy people; I don't see the fit here.

Bad assumption. You're right about one thing; everyone has Wi-Fi capability, but not everyone pays for wireless data on every device that they own. Sure, I've got an iPhone with wireless data, but my iPod doesn't have it...it's kind of stupid to pay for 2 separate wireless data plans. There's a lot of benefit to having a wireless hot spot in the vehicle through which people can connect. Give BMW some credit; they do market research.

I know, right? It's like when I bought a Mac Powerbook G4 and three weeks later, they released the MacBook Pro. Wuh wuh wuh. Technology is awesome, but keeping up with the "new factor" can be frustrating.

It's stupid to have 2 separate data plans but not stupid to pay BMW for an additional data plan? I'd rather have a wireless hotspot on my phone with a single data plan.

Exactly, the SDK is the only interesting part. But surely it must be compatible with the now old BMW nav. Otherwise BMW are just stupid!

Here in Europe we can get a twin sim, uses the same plan as your phone but only supports data. It is supposed to be used in iPads, cars and so on. Costs about $5 extra.

Android compatibility looks the most interesting. Does this mean they will port over the BMW remote app from iOS to android? or is it only going to be available on the new november builds?

My *hope* is that the LTE hotspot will be portable from the phone's SIM. If you're having to pay BMW for anything, it's the equipment. The data plan would be through the carrier; but again...I'd hope that it's an extension of your existing plan. If not...then yeah, not useful.
