340i now always starting as if it was cold

I had a new gearbox fitted to my 340i recently, I got the car back yesterday and since I've had it back, regardless of the oil temp, it always does a cold start. Previously, it only did a cold start if it wasn't up to temperature but that's no longer the case.

Is it cause for concern? I'm not sure it needs to do that all the time.

Anyone else got this, or anyone with a brand new one doing this? They updated the car's i-step in the process so I'm wondering if it's something to do with this or if there's a sensor unplugged.

Thanks!

Why do you think it's always a cold start?

The waste gate is open and it revs to 1300 rpm or so before settling to 750rpm or so after about 10-15 seconds

Ok, interesting, guess my early version of software didn't do it. Thanks all

My car does this all the time. Was just going to start a thread about it. 7500 miles now, July 2015 production.

Mine does it since day 1...it is a bit irritating...even when the engine is warm.

What is your current I-Step level? I'm at F020-16-03-501.

Mine always revs above 1k when starting, and then settles down. Seems to operate the same when cold/hot.

Shouldn't this be considered a feature... performance engine does a loud start?

yes, the reason for the concern is it didn't do this when I bought the car, it's only done it since the i-step upgrade.

My B58 does that as well.
Even if I've just driven 30 minutes on the highway, if I shut the engine off and fire it right back up it will go a bit over 1000rpm and then slowly drop to around 700-750rpm.

The problem I have is that I have a distinct "shake" once the idle drops to around 1000rpm and the shake continues until around 850-800rpm.
The shake feels like either a misfiring plug or a faulty injector.
Once idle is below 800 and at normal, it's smooth as butter.

However, that shake is annoying, and if I try to drive off before waiting for the idle to drop I will get an occasional stall as I give I it throttle.
The cars moves a bit forward, cough - stall for a split second and then goes normally.

The shake has been there for day 1. The stall has only started within the past month or two. I've reported the issue to my dealer and they have a case open with BMW. However, nothing yet because BMW needs to get more cars with same or similar issue in order to find a cure.
However, I can push the issue and then BMW will have to send a field tech to look closer at my 340i. I'm waiting until around mid August and if I hear nothing from my dealer, then I'm going to have them call the BMW field tech/engineer. This is one very smooth and powerful engine. But, I'm getting very annoyed at it's "cold start" behavior, and now the stalling thing is bugging me as it feels like some old beater for the first few minutes after start or restart. BMW >

I will add that even though I too have the over 1k rpm restart even when the engine temp is hot, how long it takes for the idle to drop to normal is quicker when the engine is restarted when hot compared to when cold.
During the colder months cold start had the higher rpm idle go longer to help warm things.
With the warmer weather cold start high idle drops quicker, and hot restart high idle drops quicker.

I hope I didn't confuse you with what I just wrote.

BTW, I believe my 335i w/N55 did this as well, except high rpm cold or hot start was smoother on the way down to base idle.
I notice this mostly because of the shaky idle of my 340i on any start, cold or hot.
Again, BMW >

100% have the same thing. It's better now, but it was a huge pain in the ass when I first got the car.

I was wondering if I was the only one experiencing the same behavior: high RPMs on start whether cold or warm, and the shake under 1k during warm up that makes it seem like the engine is misfiring. I haven't complained to the dealer yet, but I may if it helps resolve it.
