MPG on dash and miles until gas tank empty?

Hey guys, I apologize if this has been discussed before but I couldn't find anything on search. I just went from an e90 328i to f30 335i today and one feature I couldn't find and miss is the dash (where the speedometer is) displaying how many miles you have remaining in your gas tank. Did they get rid of this?

Also, there is a discrepancy between the MPG on the dash and iDrive trip odometer. I was surprised when I looked down and saw 14.9 MPG so I went into iDrive and it shows 27.5 MPG. Am I missing something or do I have a problem? This is when parked, it's not the dynamic MPG meter that changes depending on the gas pedal.

There's a button on the end of the turn signal stalk to cycle through the different trip computer displays. The MPG on the dash is an overall average while the iDrive MPG is per trip average.

Press a button on the left stalk to cycle through the trip meter, miles to empty, etc, etc.

The idrive meter might be different because the car has 2 different trip computers - the one first mentioned - that you usually reset through pressing the same button on the stalk - and another one too. No idea why.

The stalk/cluster (BC aka OBC) is manually reset. It's up to the driver to define the "trip," and I'd bet that in most cases this becomes a lifetime average. Those who care might reset it with each fillup of the tank... I've made a habit of doing that. The iDrive trip computer gives more information at a glance, and for that I'd bet that most check the "reset automatically" box (I do) and it basically shows you per-trip information, literally.

OP, you should really consult your owner's manual. It's all in there.

Thanks! Weird how there's 2 separate trip odometers. I'm glad the miles remaining feature is still there. I forgot about using the stalk button to cycle through the cluster display, but it's also odd that the iDrive odometer show MPG, miles traveled, average speed, etc., but omits that stat.

The Lexus I had before my BMW had an avg mpg, but it also had a "Tank Avg" that automatically reset each time you filled up. That's how I've been using the 2 different meters--I reset the trip computer each time I fill up, but don't touch the display in the IP controlled by the stalk--the "On Board Info".

Switch to "On Board Info" rather than "Trip Computer" and it will display miles to empty on the iDrive screen.

You have a trip computer and on-board computer, plus a choice to see either on the main screen via iDrive. I personally have mine saved to a couple of the memory buttons, one for the trip and another for the OBC. An instant view of the details (including the range in the OBC screen) at a touch of a button.

Sorry for bumping old thread but I was just curious if there was a way to check OBC for how many liters are remaining fuel tank like you could on the e36? I just bought my 2012 328i and filled it up from empty (stopped fueling at first click) and the dash fuel gauge registered less than a full tank. I really don't like "topping off" but I want to make sure I get tank filled correctly.

I know on the e36 you had to unlock the system test functions to be able to do the fuel level check, is there a way to do that on the F30?

The manual says "The fuel tank is full when the filler nozzle clicks off the first time." Good reasons why that is the correct way but I'm no tech so I won't try to explain it, when in doubt trust the manual.

I always stop pumping when it clicks off the first time but when I filled up the other day the needle on the dash didn't go all the way to full. It wasn't particularly hot so I'm sure it wasn't a vapor issue.

When you get down to a couple of gallons or so in the tank a chime will sound, and a warning on the instrument panel will say that you're on the reserve tank. Then the distance to empty will be shown on the instrument panel. It calculates that distance based on your current MPG, so if you then go up a hill it will go down, if you go down a hill it will go up. I tested it out a few weeks ago, and filled it up when it said I had 25 miles left. Based on the 14.5 gallons I got into my 15.8 gallon tank I'd say the read out was accurate.

This is the link to the technical manuals. On pages 14 thru 16 of the Chapter 6 "Displays" manual. You should be able to follow the directions to complete the "unlock" process.

It's also not entirely accurate... If that number drops to "0", it changes into "-". Don't ask me how I know.

I would go so far as saying that you have approximately 4 miles of hypermiling from the moment the indicator changes from "0" to "-" to running out completely out of fuel and the car just stop.

Don't ask me how i know either ...
