Stored my car...still got hit (updated w/pictures)

I just took my car out of storage tonight for the first time since thanksgiving and I go to take off the cover to find that either my dad or grandmother hit a piece of workout equipment into the side of my car and left a 8 inch crease in my fender and door worst part is its family so I can't call anyone out or get mad (my grandmother is a sweet little old lady that bakes me cookies, I can't yell at her or ask demand she pay)... So now I'm out at least 500 on insurance, all because I stored my car :

New and good cars seem to be a magnet for damage. I park mine very carefully, but it still got a scratch on the fender which I got fixed by BMW. This is one month after I took delivery.

Then last night, I went to the car to check all was well. What do I see? The SOAB that lives across the road had parked his Courier Van with his front bumper (fender) touching my rear fender. Was I mad? Checked it carefully. No marks. I'll tackle him today.

Yup, got a door ding a month into ownership. Polished it off with Scratch Doctor so that wasn't blatantly obvious and moved on with life.

The way I see it, I bought the car to enjoy it. Life is too short to be angry or paranoid about every little thing that can happen to my car. If I take it that seriously, I'd enjoy driving a used Police Interceptor more .

I would take that car to the best paintless-dent-repair place I could find, and see if they could pop it out. Painting/bondo is gonna be $$$ and never look quite right.

Well guys, Ive looked it over and after dealing with body work and owning a detailing business I can tell you one thing, I'm replacing both the door and the fender. Theres no way to pull the dents, they buckled on the edge and you need at least an inch from the edge of a panel to pull the dent.

I know I'm being a perfectionist but I am not leaving that on the car, I have a very small dent on the hood that I have no real issue with but this you can see from a far ways off and its on my drivers side.

As proof of how blatant it is, my roommate who is not a car guy at all, walked out onto our deck this morning to say whats good and instead the first thing he says is 'wow, you weren't kidding I can see that from back here, ouch'....

Parked my E90 335i at the train station last year to go to the NY Auto Show. Parked at the end of an aisle with tons of room between me and the next car. No room to park on the other side of me. Came back to a hit car. Sometimes you just wonder if people just don't care or if they just see hitting a BMW as fun......

Wow, that sucks. I would be pissed. Too bad, it was caused by a family member.

I got a door ding at work (yeah...I KNOW WHO DID IT). Head of security for my office building did it...

It was a serious dent though, no paint damage. Spend about 8 hours with a ding king and a hair dryer fixing it. Luckily, I have had to do this before and it is 98% gone. You can really only see it if u kneed down and look up at the car from 6 inches off the ground.

In your case, that sucks much worse since its a crease. Looks like a good shop could get it repaired (possibly without having to repaint). But if insurance is paying I would just have it repainted and even maybe a new set of panels, the paint in the area of the crease may have been stressed and eventually will show tiny cracks once it goes from cold to hot and expands.

So true. Every time I get a new motor I wonder what fate has in store. When I got my E91 in 2011 I got hit from behind twice in one week.

I know how you feel because my car just got three dents on the driver's door. The good news is that I went to a local paintless dent repair shop (which is what they only) do and for $150, and in less than 1 hour, all three dents disappeared and the car looks as of they never happened. If it's not too late for you (don't know if you filed for insurance yet) but you should definitely check out anyone locally who does these repairs because you'll save a lot $$ and get to keep the original manufacturer's paint. Good luck to you!

There's no way to fix up an edge ding like that. PDR is for "conveniently" located dings/dents.

You Need a Hug!!!

As stated, how can you rip into the elderly relative on something like this? Mentioning it will only induce guilt and embarrassment on their part. Many of us have been there with elderly parents/grandparents.

Sending a collective hug...
  • It's just a car, it can be fixed
  • Family is more important than things
  • Sometimes it is better to ignore than confront

Now, take the car for a drive and scream at the top of your lungs for one minute. The frustration will melt away.

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.

My car had a linear dent just like the OP and they fixed it before my own eyes. You having nothing to lose to bring it a shop that specializes in PDR.

Well apparently my Ins. is better than I thought! My deductible is only $100 for this type of damage and they said they would probably be able to order up new panels instead of bondo!

Now I just have to hope and pray that my car can make it through this weekend's snowstorm... RWD + 1foot+ of snow = no fun. (the one time I miss quattro!)
