Active Autowerkes Dual Exhaust on my 428i

I got in touch with Mike from X-PH and asked about the AA exhaust for my 428i. I orginally looked at a number of different exhaust and decided that I wanted the dual exhaust look. I ordered the 435i stock diffuser and settled for the AA exhaust for the 335i/435i from Mike. I based my decision mostly on cost. The shipping was extremely quick and communication was great throughout.

I originally was going to install it myself, but decided to let a professional shop do it. There are a number of shops in the LA area, but I decided to stop by http://platteforme.com/ and have them take a look at it. Jason was really helpful and their technicaians were able to trouble shoot and install the exhaust within about 2 hours. We decided to weld it onto the stock pipe and tried to fit it as straight as possible with the rear diffuser. The only issue with this was that the tips were farther in than expected and you can't really see the AA engraved on the tips with the diffuser on. This didn't really bother me, so we went ahead and left it.

In terms of performance, the AA exhaust is actually pretty quiet. On startup it sounds pretty mean, but under normal acceleration it sounds almost stock. It doesn't really drone and I haven't had any issues with that. Coming from a road racing/motorcycle/motocross racing background, I really felt that it is too quiet, but it's nice to be able to have a conversation with the passenger and hear everything they are saying. Everyone will have a different preference, so I'll leave it at that.

There is some noticeable difference in acceleration. It feels a bit quicker when I'm in Sport/+ mode and under hard acceleration. I have a completely stock car in terms of motor modifications. Currently, I have the Berger Tune on order, so I'll report back after that is installed. Below are some pictures of the install and Platte Forme AG. They have some nice cars there! I will continue to update this post with videos of the exhaust when I have time. In the end, I was happy with the results, especially for the price I paid on the exhaust.

Looks good any videos? I wish AA would make a plug and play dual set up for the 328 with the same pipe diameter instead of a bunch of custom exhaust work

You can buy the diffuser any where they sell OEM parts. I got mine online from
http://www.getbmwparts.com/index.cfm , the part is #51128054564 . It's usually pretty cheap. As for the tips, they are pretty big! Not sure the size, I'll have to measure them later.

Seeing so much of the inner pipe slipping through the outer sleeve would drive me crazy. Cheapens the look. Is there a way to cut the inner pipe back so it looks more like a one piece tip?? Why is the inner pipe so rough on the left one from 9 o'clock to 1 o'clock? Did they have to already cut it and didn't file it smooth?

Looks good! The exhaust is definitely louder on the 435. The only thing I can think of is the muffler may be a little to large for the flow of the n20.

Thx! I just worry the 100mm tips won't fit the oem 435 diffuser then I have to trim it•••

It could just be the low quality of my camera phone and the angle, but the inner pipe was not rough at all. You could probably cut the inner pipe a bit, but the look with the outer sleeve doesn't bother me. If you feel it cheapens the look, than I suggest you look at some other options.

I can imagine it probably would be louder for the 435i. It actually is starting to get a tad bit louder, maybe it just needed some time to break in. For me, it is the perfect balance in sound, since I can get on it when I want and I'm not waking up the neighbors every time I leave my place. I'll have some sound clips soon for everyone.

Finally had the time to get a video up. Just a quick video of the car starting up. I'll try and get some fly by videos in the future.

Not only that by why make a misleading Youtube title too...What if someone with an actual 335/435 listens to that as a sound reference? Id rename it to 328/ n20 w/ AA 435 dual exhaust or something.

My bad. I changed the title. Hope that makes it clear. If you read my first post, I talk about what exhaust I used, who I ordered it from, and how it was fitted to the car. Hope this helps.

Hey mate. I was curious on this set up but iam not sold on it now

Do u have some drive by videos. What about some videos under acceleration.

You mention it's quiet like stock, but is that from inside the cabin. The mpe's are quiet from inside the cabin as well but sound tough from the outside. Does this thing burble, make any nice noises when shift?

Sorry about the questions but your review put me off this set up. Based on your review and other videos i have seen a stock 335 muffler on 328 or a 335/328 mpe on a 328 sounds more appealing

Op, how long did the shop take to install your exhaust? Including all the cutting, etc. Thanks!
