BMW NA Recall: Brake Power Assist Pump on 20i and 28i Models
22
COMMENTS

BMW NA has issued a recall for certain 4-cylinder powered 20i and 28i models for potential brake power assist problems. Here is the recall information from the NHTSA.

The affected models/years are as follows:

BMW/320I/2012-2014
BMW/328I/2012-2014
BMW/428I/2014
BMW/528I/2012-2013
BMW/X1/2013-2014
BMW/X3/2013-2014
BMW/Z4/2012-2014

NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V-627 (14V627000)

Components:
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

Potential Number of Units Affected: 8,988

Problem Description:
BMW of North America LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2014 BMW 328i xDrive Sports Wagon, 2012-2014 BMW 320i
Sedan, 328i Sedan, 320i xDrive Sedan, 328i xDrive Sedan, 2012-2013 BMW 528i Sedan, 528i xDrive Sedan, 2013-2014 BMW X1
sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i Sports Activity Vehicle, 2013-2014 BMW X3 xDrive28i Sports Activity Vehicle, 2012-2014 BMW Z4
sDrive28i Roadster, and 2014 BMW 428i Coupe, and 428i xDrive Coupe. Due to insufficient lubrication, the vacuum pump that
supplies brake power assistance may fail.

Consequence:
A failure of the brake vacuum pump results in a reduction in braking power that could increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will install a locking ring in the camshaft to retain the camshaft seal disk in the proper location,
free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in November 2014. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Attached is the official NHTSA Acknowledgement Letter.

The i and d vacuum pumps are completely different. If it's not listed in the recall guidelines, you should be fine.

That's a small percentage of the total vehicle sold for the model and year range affected. Meaning most people with these cars don't have a problem.

Interesting this considering the apparently widespread problems with vacuum pumps on N46 2.0 engines.

I just looked up my vin on safercar.gov to see if there are any recalls. Accord to that site, I'm ok. We'll see if I get a letter from BMW or not.

Same question I have. There was a recall last year related to the camshaft and brake Assist. Is this just a strangely similar problem or another announcement of the same problem?

Are only US cars affected or is it international?

I'm a bit worried, brakes are a kind of dangerous topic...

This is an expansion of that recall (13V-454). I'm assuming they found more cars that are subject to the problem.

I was at dealer for servicing yesterday, they didn't say anything so can I assume my car is ok?

I wouldn't assume anything in this regard. If your car falls in the range of models selected, you should ask.

It is not the dealers responsibility to contact you. When the parts are available and the recall is released, you will receive a letter from BMW NA.
