A million times sheer driving pleasure: One-millionth BMW 3 Series Sedan produced at BMW South Africa's Rosslyn Plant.

February 26, 2015

Munich/Rosslyn. The one-millionth vehicle, a BMW 3 Series Sedan, rolled off the assembly line at BMW's South African manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria, earlier today. The production anniversary was celebrated during a visit by member of the Management Board of BMW AG responsible for production, Harald Krüger.

"Globalization has been an inherent part of our corporate strategy for more than four decades. Established in 1973, plant Rosslyn was BMW Group's first foreign plant and represents a cornerstone of our global production network with presently 30 sites in 14 countries. To this day, the South African production site remains a vivid example of a successful market entry through local production," said Krüger on the occasion of the anniversary.

BMW cars made in South Africa are also successful on the international stage. Since its inception, and before the establishment of a dedicated international automobile industry, BMW South Africa has exported cars. In 2014, BMW 3 Series Sedan exports from Plant Rosslyn increased by over 17% which clearly solidified BMW South Africa's position as the country's leading exporter of premium vehicles.

BMW South Africa directly and indirectly employs over 43,000 people: more than 3,700 associates at the plant and at the national sales organisation, as well as over 3,700 dealership staff and some 36,000 first-tier supplier employees. In 2014, the more than 2,900 workers at the Rosslyn plant built 68,771 BMW 3 Series Sedans for the local and export markets.

Too bad all 3-series are not Made in Germany any more. Soon your BMW will be made in the USA - just like x3, x5, z4, etc.

What's wrong with that? Who cares where they're built.

What are you suggesting?

I was under the impression that the Spartanburg and Rossyln plants actually have fewer QC issues than the German plants....

+1 Id say German engineering is more important than German manufacturing (ED eligibility not withstanding). You'd never know my X5 was built by bubba in SC it's as good a BMW as you can buy!

I'd love that. Delivery times for factory orders would be measured in weeks, not months.

In support of that, I remember a few years back when the fans of Honda were all upset about the Accord being made in Ohio - the quality will suffer and all they will build with American workers will be junk riddled with quality problems.

Well, a study was conducted and it turned out the cars made in Ohio, by those lazy/sloppy/I don't give a damn American workers, were of higher quality (as in fewer defects related to assembly) than those built in Japan.

It does not matter where its made
The important thing is where its design and ideas come from
And thats Germany
And besides
Other countries they dont make the supplies
Germany sends them the supplies
America just put it togather

Doesn't have MSport, does have lighting, unless it is a 335i in which case those Xenons are standard.

It is a Luxury Line. Sport and M-Sport only have 8 upright slats per side in the kidney grills. Luxury Line has 11. Not mention the center chrome accent on the bumper.

Now if they could just improve their shipping times from SA to the US I'd be impressed...

ˆThis x 1,000

Look at Peugeot, Citroen, Fiat...: no matter where cars are made, they are unreliable and with subpar fit and finish

Look at Seat and Skoda products and compare them to what they were 20+ years ago. Zero doubt German engineering has everything to do with it. It would be great if Fiat would agree to sell Alfa Romeo to VAG!

Sort of, although I think location is much less important than process nowadays. They build them the same way, with the same quality control, wherever the plant is.

Newness of plant and flexibility of the work force are huge advantages for non-German assembly.

I want my BMW designed by the best minds and built in the best factory -- and I couldn't care less where those people and factories are.

You are totally right. FTW. I even asked my brother what his F30 VIN started with to verify production location. Anyone who says it doesn't matter, doesn't know.

Well, if they aren't built in Germany you can't go pick up your car in Germany.

Not just ideas, I've had the some conversation with people on VW forums going apeshit that their precious car would be built in Mexico

It doesn't matter who bolts it together, it's the manufacturer that sets defect and production goals. If a Mexican built Jetta falls apart, it's not the Mexican worker's fault (well, not ALL their fault), it's the Quality Control from VW that is to blame. They design the parts, they decide if a car passes their inspection and makes it to sale, they decide what if any shortcuts to take on the line.

As for the Japanese quality, it's all about perception. I remember when Honda first started building the Odyseey in Alabama. People would always talk big about they don't buy American cars cause they are crap, usually an insult about lazy blue collar workers was worked in.

Loved pointing out their precious Japanese van was assembled in the US.

Japenese cars are Still touted as the best in quality, blah, blah. Anyone remember when Toyota had to recall hundreds of thousands of trucks because the WHEELS fell off? No one skips a beat saying Toyota builds a great car. To my knowledge, they are the only automaker that ever had a recall for a wheel falling off. LOL

Apple manages to make some remarkable products by designing them in California and manufacturing them in CHINA. The point being that design influence is tremendous when it comes to building a solid product.

BTW, I'm not saying that if iPhones were made in U.S., they would be less reliable.......US is not even an option here....
