iPhone auto starting music is driving me crazy!

Due to the audio quality difference of bluetooth over USB, I always plan on using USB connection for my iPhone 6. I also use apps to play music exclusively (spotify mostly, sometimes pandora).

My phone is also connected via bluetooth to the car.

What's driving me absolutely mad is that most of the time when i get in, music will start playing from my iPhone. I suspect it's over bluetooth, but am not 100% positive.

This is driving me crazy because it's using the built-in iOS Music app which is just playing some random tracks in my iTunes account. These are the track that apple gave me for free, so it shows up in my Music app as not downloaded but available for streaming.

I don't want it to ever start playing music from that music app. I'd be ok with it auto starting Spotify to playback, but I'm skeptical that will ever work correctly due to it being an app.

Questions:
1. How can I disable this behavior?
2. Since I always connect my phone via USB, what is bluetooth used for? Is it required for phone calls, office, etc? Or can I safely disconnect from bluetooth altogether?

I've had this same issue on rental cars and I'm sure it'll annoy me with my 335i on order. I did a quick search and couldn't find a solution if, like me, you use the music app.

In your case, you can delete the music. As for the streaming, you can go to Settings > Cellular and turn of cellular data for the music app. That should prevent music from being streamed unless you're connected to wifi.

Also, you should be able to turn off Show All Music under Settings > Music.

Hope this helps.

Great tip about turning off streaming OTA and the "show all music". Hopefully this will fix it because I shouldn't have any music locally

I can't believe this isn't an option to disable anywhere!

I've never had anything like this happen. Anyway, yes Bluetooth is used for phone calls and office functions. I don't think you want to turn it off on the phone. What you want to do is disable music over Bluetooth. Go to Connections, then the entry for your phone. Move the wheel to the right and Configure the phone/connection. There you can uncheck music. That should fix whatever this problem is.

Good point! I think I noticed this when I was trying to play music during my test drives.

I should be able to play with this for real in a couple weeks!

This fixed it only for Bluetooth. It will still occasionally auto play over USB.

I believe the tip earlier about disabling "show all music" and cellular use for music app will do it.

I also have this problem. It's a running joke that my car is obsessed with Coldplay!

Really annoying BMW haven't resolved this.

Follow up on this after having my 2015 335i for two weeks...

I don't think my music has started up from my iPhone once since I've had it and I connected my phone to Bluetooth at the dealer.

A couple things:

- I turned off music on the Bluetooth connection screen, just have calls.
- I usually have radio selected as the audio option

I'd have to play around, but it really doesn't seem like it would be that difficult to stop the auto play that you guys are experiencing unless BMW changed something on my model.

If you have Spotify on, it will default to that. I however usually have all apps turned off on my phone so car usually starts up the music from my own collection in the phone.
Sorta off topic, is it usually normal for the gracenote stuff to not update when playing music in Spotify? First song has everything right but that would be it.
