GFB DV+ installation on 320i ?

anyone tried DIY ?
Does it require tuning after installation or it will work well with my Racechip?

There is no additional tuning.

I have mine, but haven't yet attempted the install. I'm installing on N20 328i engine, but the kit is the same for the 320i.

I spoke to GFB about the install. They have some customers that have installed them, but apparently it is not easy.

It will likely require the turbo to be removed or at least loosened for the install.

So I finally installed my DV+from GFB. This is on a 2014 F30 328i N20 Engine.

I decided that at $110 per hour and the shop saying 6.5 hours, it was worth having a crack at it myself...

Anyway the install is a total PITA! It is very very fiddly, and very time consuming! It took me the better part of 5 hours.

First let me say I have a garage that charges me $20 per hour to use a bay with a lift. The lift is a huge time and energy saver. I personally wouldn't attempt this without one, but it is probably possible.

I started off by removing the under tray, air intake box and silence/MAF section.

Then I undid the metal heat shield above the exhaust manifold, so that I had access to the top side exhaust manifold nuts.

Then I removed the downpipe to give me access to the underside and rear portion of the exhaust manifold. There are other write-ups on how to remove the DP (with the instruction on disconnecting the Sensor leads etc), so I will leave that bit out here.

Following that I removed the lead in intake pipe to the turbo (one nut underneath) and the hot charge pipe (fast clip type).

Now I had access to the manifold bolts. Well almost all of them. The last top rear one requires the O2 sensor lead support bracket to be loosened and rotated out of the way.

Before undoing the manifold nuts, I decided to check how tight they were. Amazingly they are not that tight. I was able to tighten them with just a regular socket wrench. You need Torx bits for this. The manifold nuts use a T50 I think.

Anyway I loosened all the nuts (pretty sure they are made out of Bronze) about 40 half turns (with ratchet socket wrench) so there was about 1/2" space between the nut bottom and the manifold. Thinking this would not allow me enough access to the DV bolts. WRONG...

More inspection and I find that there are two turbo stabilizing brackets. One behind and one in front. Loosened them both off to virtually undone. Then I loosened off the manifold nuts about 10 more turns. Pretty much to their end.

Victory dance!! You can now get at the DV bolts (also a Torx - T30 I think). You will need a long thin extension, but it is possible to get the last bolt out with that extension.

I removed the DV and followed the GFB instructions to fit the DV+ Kit. Very simple.

Putting the part back in the car you're not sure if it is going to fit. It's tighter than a ducks butt in there! And what makes it more difficult is you have to hold the piston in while installing it. Otherwise it can drop out and get damaged. Well lots of wiggling and swearing and finally goes in.

Then you realize it's not over. Getting the new extended bolts in is also not easy, but more fiddling and those go in and get tightened. You still need the long extension, only now it's a hex key bit in the end of it.

Before putting everything back together and tightening the bolts I pushed the manifold back up to its original position, and the head of the bolt in the DV+ closest to the cylinder head just clears. And when I say "just" I mean it looks like you couldn't get a pubic hair in between them. Though it doesn't feel like they're touching.

From there it's just reverse everything and put it all back together.

Lots of skinned knuckles and scrapes later, but It definitely behaves better than the stock DV. It really does do what they say it does. If you install it with their piston spring, the lag goes way down compared to the stock one and boost is held so much better than before. It just feels so much cleaner and smoother. The sound from the blow off is also a little different with much quicker spurts.

I guess that's because there is no leakage from it like there used to be from the stock one, and because once the pressure equalizes on both sides of the piston, the spring takes over and shuts it, even if the solenoid is still open.

I'm very happy! Oh and driving back from the garage I didn't get a CEL as GFB say can happen with the piston spring installed. Maybe because I was not that heavy footed.

Nope none so far.

I still have a boost leak somewhere, so I am not pushing it. that's why I have the ER charge pipes ordered.

Also my smoke tester should be complete soon, so I will be spending a few days smoke testing while my ECU is away for the latest GSR flash. Hopefully I can find the leak and have it sorted before the ECU comes back.

Once it's all sorted I'll be able to push the DV+ a little harder

No driving while the ECU is away bro. But you can smoke test the system. You don't need the ECU for that.

I built a paint can smoke tester like this one.

Easy to build for anyone. Now you can find boost leaks by yourself, anywhere.

I'm working out how to connect it to our charge system. I'm thinking probably remove the intake/silencer/MAF pipe and hook the smoke tester up to the remaining lead in section to the turbo. Then fill the system with pressurized smoke.

Fingers crossed that identifies the leak.

This seems intriguing. I used the DV+ on my Stage 2 GTI and it was fantastic. Did exactly what they say it does. Of course, it only took 30 mins on my back in the garage with that car.

Might do this if I upgrade. haha The write up is the best way to go about it rather then removing the entire manifold.
