Dealer quoted me 10 hours to install the M Performance Brake kit
Dealer reckons it takes that long to install the brake kit. Had to roll my eyes, but seems very excessive.
For people who have installed this kit (including rear rotors) how long did the dealer take ? |

I have not done this replacement (my car came Spec'd with m perf brakes) but out of curiosity, I went to Dinans site to see what they spec for install of the brembo brakes they offer.
Consider the source (me, the uneducated customer) and I completely get that I may be drawing a comparison akin to "apples and lawnmowers", but their estimates are 3.5 hours front + 4.8 hours total = 8.3 total hours. Good luck.

10 hours - I believe it. Took me about 6 hours just to install the brakes (fronts + rears) themselves. This didn't include coding, bedding procedure, and more test drives.

That $950 for M-Sport from the factory seems cheap.

seems only about 3 hours excessive, it is for front & rear, but regardless paying 10 hours @ stealership rates is a really bad idea esp for a job that any decent mechanic can do

I installed mine in about 4 hours, but I had to raise the rear and then lower it and then the front and so on and so forth. Overall, as long as you get a pressure bleeder, you can do it yourself. Much easier to install then my Dinan springs.

I just swapped in a 335i brake set onto a 320i. Not exactly the same on the rear but the install is. It took about 2 1/2 hours including bleeding and test drive. Add maybe an hour since the calipers in the kit probably don,t come loaded(pads and hardware boxed , not already installed in them) Add an hour for the dealer to code for sport brake. (excessive but min for coding at my dealer)

@optimaxed, ask Dealer what's involved for the 10 hours. I bet this is the "standard" hours for full brake system overhaul, whether it actually takes 4 hours to install or not.

The brakes look amazing, but I am not impressed with the pedal feel. I brought it back last week and they re-bled the system twice, but it still feels the same to me. They are really strong but there's no initial bite. A few people have reported that things stiffen up after a few thousand miles, so I have my fingers crossed. |

The only way you are going to change bite is to change the pads to something more aggressive. The tighting up after some miles is the improvement you get when the pads are bedded but if you really want better feel you want to change the pads to something else.

never go to the dealership, they always charge by what's indicated in the "books". Their excuse? "oh we can't lower the estimated hours charged for installation or else we wouldn't have any business". total BS, go elsewhere
I recently had my suspension done, dealer quoted me 10 hrs at $100/hr...went elsewhere who did a superb job and charged only 5 hrs.

Thanks for all your comments everyone.
So I spoke with a couple of specialized independent shops and then spoke to another BMW dealership. The technician there was aware of the feedback of the soft pedal. Installed the brakes and bled the system, drove the car, rebled system, drove the car and then rebled ensuring no air was in there. Also did programming. The brake pedal doesn't feel soft, responds much better than standard set up. When actually hauling down from higher speed, the brakes retard the car strongly but these pads give off a LOT of brake dust. I paid $2650 in total for the full system (+ rear rotors) including install and got to ride around in a new X5 loaner for a day ! |
