Humming noise...
I have recently upgraded my 2014 320i to a 2014 320d with approx. 20k km. When driving at 60km/h there is a rough grinding/humming noise coming from what sounds like the front left wheel, up to about 80km/h this is audible and then dissapears if you go over 80km/h.
Funny thing is - when the vehicle is cold you don't hear it at all, but especially after a long highway drive, it seems harsher and louder. Any thoughts? - Wheel-bearing perhaps? |

I was experiencing the same issue. Believe it or not, it may be just wind noise. After listening to it on various roads, in various weather conditions, and letting it drive me nuts, I believe it is coming from the wind being buffeted between the A-pillar and driver's mirror. I could be wrong, but I determined it was worse on windier days, especially driving into the wind. Sounds like a weird diagnosis because the symptoms are very close to a bad wheel bearing.

So just came back from the local Wheel and Tire specialist - did not tell the guy the symptoms - just asked if he could please check the wheel balancing.
So he did - and came to me asking if I hear a noise that sounds like a shot wheel bearing!? I then replied saying indeed! He then proceeded to tell me that its caused my "hard-driving and cornering" and the only way to fix it is to make sure wheel alignment is 100% and replace with new tires. I actually saw the result of his testing when he used something that draw's on the tire while it rotates, and you can clearly see where the lines don't "draw" on the tire. So - wheels balanced and i just have to live with it until its time for new tires, they are probably 70%+ remaining, so not going to pay for the sound to dissapear... :-( US$244 for one tire... |

I had similar noise problem and used to hear similar type of noise from front side of car while driving (more while accelerating) and i wanted make sure if its tire/road noise.
Dealer checked and told all good and the only reason for the sound could be due to improper contact between tires and road. He told to rotate tires so you can shift noise to back and get wheel alignment. He literally said no other way to fix this problem and just have to live with it. Can you suggest any better tire shops (for alignment) who does good work? Thanks |

So the issue got so bad I couldn't live with it any more.
Dealer gave me brand new Pirelli's and the noise is gone. Now I have vibrating issues. Did balancing today and its not gone. Starting to regret my purchase. To make matters worse, I was bumped into last week as well. New bumper. |

Very nice. Sometimes tires come out of round from the factory. In those cases nothing you can do will fix the vibrations you feel. On most cars the vibration isn't even noticeable but for BMWs you cant live with it. Pirelli has a 30 day money back guarantee on all their tires so keep that in mind. I hope that you at least got the P7s

If you can, tire rotation works wonders to keep performance up and wear and noise in check.
If you can't rotate, such as on staggered setups like mine, then you can do left/right swap, which also helps keeps noise down due to helping even out wear. But, you can only do that with non directional tires, if you don't want to remount the tire to the wheel. |

I have similar issues when the speed is between 110/km to 115/km. I thought was from the engine. Last week, changed to winter setup. Sounds disappeared.

Years ago there used to be places you could take a tire to make sure it was not out-of-round. They'd mount the wheel/tire on something similar to a balancing machine, check it for out-of-round, and shave off a small amount of tread to insure perfect roundness. This cured a vibration problem I had on a Porsche. Tires can develop flat spots as well as as the "cupping" phenomenon due to out-of-alignment, worn suspension, or even bent wheels.

Most likely cupping. But what is causing it... My knocking noise on the suspension is cause for concern as things are definitely feeling "loose" when going over small bumps and it wouldn't surprise me if its all connected.
Its the same old dreaded F30 knock... Hoping it will be fixed when collecting it today. |
