BMW brand sales decrease 6.4 percent
MINI brand sales decrease 21.2 percent
BMW Motorcycle sales decrease 40.0 percent

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – June 1, 2016… Sales of BMW brand vehicles decreased 6.4 percent in May for a total of 29,017 compared to 31,003 vehicles sold in May, 2015. Year-to-date, BMW brand is down 8.7 percent on sales of 124,581 compared to 136,447 sold in the first five months of 2015.

Sales of BMW Sports Activity Vehicles gave a boost to May with the new BMW X1 leading the way, increasing 93.9 percent, the BMW X3 increasing 28.0 percent and the BMW X6 increasing 26.0 percent.

“The shorter number of selling days in May no doubt affected the month totals but the ongoing transition to X models remains clear,” said Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “The BMW X1 grows more popular each month with its siblings X3 and X6 giving it strong support. The X5 was limited only by availability but that will continue improving in the months ahead.”

BMW Group Sales
In total, the BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported May sales of 33,612 vehicles, a decrease of 8.8 percent from the 36,836 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, BMW Group sales are down 9.8 percent on sales of 144,811 in the first five months of 2016 compared to 160,533 in the same period in 2015.

MINI Brand Sales
For May, MINI USA reported 4,595 automobiles sold, a decrease of 21.2 percent from the 5,833 sold in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, MINI USA reported a total of 20,230 automobiles sold, a decrease of 16.0 percent from 24,086 automobiles sold in the first five months of 2015.

But I thought big, boring cars were gonna save us all?! Money first, customers last appears to not be so smart after all, who knew?

He's looking at the section called "YTD". YTD the only thing that's gaining are SUV's and crossovers...which pretty much echos the entire auto industry, at least in the US, but go on and continue with the monthly discussion the arm chair analysts like to engage in where they like to predict that BMW will cease to exist as a company unless they build a car that looks, behaves, and drives exactly like a car they built and sold 20 years ago.

The X1 is an SAV (SUV) I don't know why it is clarified differently in North America?
So it must be included. Either way its an X model and they are driving numbers.
Expect the forthcoming X1 iPerformance to account for a hefty percentage of sales. X5 eDrive/iPerformance account for 10% of total X5 sales.

I don't really have a knock on modern BMW's. We own an F30, it's dull, but so were non M E36, E46 and E90 3ers.

Other brands like Jaguar and Volvo have YOY sales growth, albeit on much smaller volume and MB continues to outsell BMW.

I don't foresee any chance of BMW ceasing to exist, but a return to a simpler product line and a few simple things like LSD availability and lighter cars would not hurt things.

It's not like they cheated on diesel emissions, that we know of...

Stop catering to the Lexus crowd BMW! Keep the original formula, keep the cars crisp and give them feel. You are losing the plot with the scattershod model designations. The X4, new X1 (FWD architecture) and 2 series grand tourer are absolutely ridiculous and have no business in the product lineup. The i# is a styling mess and the range extender should offer at least 2.5x the current range. Continue to offer manual transmissions and expand their availablilty. Porsche learned this the hard way.

rant mode off.

Could it be that NA considers it a CUV (crossover?) I remember the last gen X1 being described as that?

surprised to see X5 sales are down, but it makes sense that luxury car sales are being impacted considering the stock market slump we've been in for the past ~6 months

Once the new G20 is out we'll see a bump. Interestingly the X3 continues to sell well despite its replacement coming out later this year

Yeah that last bit wasn't directed at you directly (I can see how it'd come off that way). That was more so a broad statement mocking the attitude of some people on here every single time sales figures are released.

We've dealt with doom and gloom for a few years now. The LCI helped the F30, The F10 is about to go away, G series are supposed to be lighter. All good things.

MINI is just lost, and priced out of the market though.

Hey comes down to money Bmw this year not offering decent incentives !!! It's the only brand with out a loyalty discount !! I would love a x5 but instead I will buy a Mercedes gls with some nice incentives and it was just released the x5 is dated now !! Bmw needs to take care of current customers !! Mercedes , Audi , Lexus and even Volvo now are just as nice if not better than Bmw !! And watch for Maserati there deals have been real good and u can see the amount of them on the road because of it ! BMW WAKE UP
