Perhaps the 3 Series is different and what you are referring to is the old 'Universal Wireless Charging Snap In Adapter'.

EDIT: Ignore the BMW case, better ones are available!
I am sure unfortunately. I wanted it to be a sleeve but it is in fact a cradle. Says so in my manual (not collected my car yet though).

Thats a bit pants then... I really hope its not a cradle in the X5 or I'll be miffed!

The cradle adjusts to the size of the phone within some constraints. The bottom of the creadle slides in and out, gripping the phone and a 'docked' light comes on. There was a good inch to spare over the size of my 6s.

Am I correct that it will cost £230 to activate Apple CarPlay for all new cars, not just those with the early idrive 5.0??

EBT + £230 seems a rip off considering it doesn't add much at all.

I would imagine it's always going to be £230 - I remember seeing that it was a 300 euro option on certain german X car models.

I haven't specified EBT on my new car, and my VIN specific online manual mentions Apple CarPlay. So, possibly available on all iDrive 5.0 cars...

Some photos of iDrive 5 and carplay in my new F31 335d. My car was built Wk 27, 4th July. Carplay was activated via connected drive store for £235.

I did want to upload many more images of the various carplay screens, but every time I go to one it takes me there on the iPhone too, away from the camera!

I'll have to use a different camera to do this later.

Thanks for the pictures....

Quick question since I was expecting he touchscreen to be a key factor in the X5 and I hate touchscreens - does the non touchscreen interface work well with car play?

I have car play on my new car (not BMW tho!)

It works quite nicely but its a bit fiddly. The Apple maps routes are sometimes interesting, but it's supposed to get the traffic from TomTom so hopefully it'll improve over time. The Spotify integration works nicely, and I prefer it from the iDrive version in my last F30. The main problem I have is that the phone functionality is a bit fiddly, but that might just need getting used to. There are supposed to be some good updated in ios 10 (Autumn I think), so looking forward to seeing what that brings, and what new apps might be supported in time.

Carplay works in my Skoda via both touchscreen and through the dial on the dashboard. I would expect something similar on the iDrive version.

Yes it works as well as the idrive itself. But would be better with touchscreen. Maybe more distracting though.

Have it, barely use it.
If you subscribe and like Apple Music like me then access to all its features is great. I would pay for ebt just for it though, you'd have to want ebt and wireless charging for its other features to justify I think.

Hi,

Any chance you could explain how the the iPhone connects to the car? Over wifi? If so, can you still use the internet on your phone whilst the phone is in the car (with/without Car Play active)?

I want to avoid having to buy a second sim for the wifi hotspot.

Pretty sure it's over wifi. I turned off wifi and the music stopped playing. Turned on again and it connected and started again.

Not sure about Internet. Will check tomorrow.

Thanks, that would be great. I've spec'd 6NW and would not be happy if it makes the iPhone try and route web through the wifi. Does the car show the wifi symbol like it's connected? I take it you spec'd wireless charging/hotspot?

Does that cradle just pop out like the old ones?

I'm thinking that I can add the cradle to a pre idrive 5.0 car with the snap in baseplate for wireless charging?

Can my 2016 Pro media be upgraded to the new idrive software?

My old man has the new idrive in his 730d for a good few months now and its quite good.

Not sure why BMW charge for this and why EBT is required, it was standard fit in my Mrs Audi A3!

Quite simply they'll charge for it while they think they can get away with it. It's likely there are some licensing costs to Apple that they don't want to absorb just yet. Historically many things we take for granted used to be options. I remember my dad looking at buying a Mercedes 300E a while back (new). Almost everything was an option, including a tape player!
Having used CarPlay on other manufacturers cars I'm inclined to spec it when I next change my car, if it's not standard by then anyway.

I have CarPlay on my 440i GC & feel it is worth the cost & would order it again. I love that it is completely wireless & I can leave my phone in my purse. And my camera works fine while connected to car play. Unlike another poster mentioned.
