Is this the new X3 M (F97) or the X3 M40i on the ring?

I'm pretty excited for the X3 M (F97) (see spy photos) car as a follow up to my F80 but only if it's a mini X5 M and not some half baked M car like the M2 with lack of M details and cheap interior.

It doesn't sound S55 ish though so maybe it's the X3 M40i

@Scott26 can you shed any info??

to me this sounds like a N55. X3 M40i seems like a good guess.

I'm sure many M2 owners would venomously disagree with your "half baked M car" comment, but I agree with you in the sense that I hope it's the real, full-M thing.

Damn that straight six sounds good... Almost Cayman like. I wish my future M3 sounded like that.

What I would give to do that for a living

no carbon fiber roof?

as with the regular X3, the interior is the key, they really need to step it up for next gen, F25 was so cheap/dated, it was a generation behind itself (if that makes sense).

No, it makes sense. It was behind the curve the day it was launched.

I wonder if a job pounding on test cars every day gets old...nah...

Is this BMWs strategy introduce a M##i car, e.g. M235i, X4 M40i, etc. to gauge market interest before releasing the full M version?

The s55 is old tech, the next m vehicles will have an engine based off the modular platform.

There will be a full compliment of specific models from BMW M.
There will be the M40i,(Non-US) M40d, and I would not rule out an M40e like the upcoming 3er. Of course all headlined by the full blooded X3M.

SQ5 is not a waste of breath for BMW, SQ5 is only tuned and rides in the same crappy suspension as Q5 nothing special
BMW is more worried about the more powerful cars for their next gen, my current X4 M40i runs lap around SQ5 in terms of handling & powa =D

Eventually. But the B58 itself is still new and usually an S motor trails behind quite awhile. I would not be surprised to see the S55 used in the X3 M and X4 M. Next generation M3/M4 would be good candidates to debut an S58 assuming they stay with an I6 which I think is likely. Possibly the Z5/Z6 M too if they end up building those.

I may know some people at bmw that let me know about this The x3m will be a monster powered by the new modular platform.
