Ryanair - a question for pilots

I always avoid flying with them, but this latest crisis has confused me. They are cancelling 40-50 flights a day, and potentially costing themselves 50-100m, and yet to an outsider it looks like they could solve this very easily.

Why can't they just hire about 30 freelance/agency pilots for the next couple of months - this would allow them to operate 15 more planes, and fill in those missing 40-50 daily short haul flights. Surely this would cost peanuts compared with the potential compensation and the damage to the brand?

There will no doubt be other long term changes required to their pilots' contracts, to increase staff retention, but what's wrong with my suggested short term solution?

Easily answered.

All the available stand-in pilots are currently in the club Nautilus in Ibiza.

With me.

We'll be out in a couple of weeks

You are assuming that there are loads of fully qualified, all up-to-date and in certificate, commercially qualified pilots just sitting around not doing anything.

I think that pretty much covers it.

Maybe a lack of pilots is not the real reason. Cover story for something else?

Haven't a load of pilots moved to competitors recently?

I just don't think there are many qualified people ready to step in?

Great to see a company that wasn't treating its people well getting what they deserve!

Gutting for those on cancelled flights though.

I used to be really good at Harrier Attack. I'll have a go if they want.

What could possibly go wrong?

Given that this isn't peak flying season, I would have thought that there would be some spare capacity somewhere in Europe. There must be tens of thousands of suitably qualified pilots in Europe in total, so to have 30 available is a very small proportion.

They did, but this may not solve the short term chaos as pilots working for other airlines have to work notice etc. I would want temporary pilots straight away if I was in Ryanair's shoes to fill the gap.

No, the pilots have all learnt that you get good money driving trains, so have given up stressful piloting in exchange for sitting on a self guided, less working hour week train, where it doesn't matter if your late and you don't get a bollocking for using more fuel than another train driver.

Sounds sensible to me.

I had it on an Amstrad 464, which had the built in tape deck!

Ryanair seem to have a view that anyone you deal with is there to be screwed over. They were like this with customers till a year or two back when it started to cost them a little, and they changed a little. It just looks like they had the same attitudes with their own staff and now it's coming back to bite them on the arse.

Apparently there is a world shortage of Commercial Pilots. Seems a very murky mess with, I suspect, misinformation being used to cover the real problem.

The FT did report today that Ryanair staff (especially across outstations) have started to use Whatsapp to co-ordinate their campaign to get better conditions and pay.

Could be a long winter of discontent for Mr O'Leary..
