Manchester traffic advice friday afternoon?

Any of you guys know Manchester well?

I am going to M3 7LJ on Friday but AA route planner seems to be taking me straight through Manchester to/from the M1 via the Peak District. I will be leaving just after lunch. I'm worried that I'll be stuck in traffic forever and need to be back for a certain time. I will follow satnav but are there any areas/roads that I should avoid?

thanks guys.

I used to live in Chesterfield and to get to there I would go out of chesterfield as far as Chapel en le Frith but then take the A624 (I think) through Hayfield towards Glossop. You then either queue through bottom end of Glossop and Mottram Moor (I think) or take a back road round Charlesworth, Broadbottom and head towards Hattersley and rejoin at roundabout for M67. Take M67 and follow the sat nav.

Or dump your car at a station and let train and tram take the strain - I used to work in Manchester and parked at Dore station (just outside Sheffield - easy drive from M1 j29) and get direct train to Manc Piccadilly and tram thereafter...

Thanks Ian. AA rout planner seems to take me off the M1 at Rotherham and then across the Peaks but then I'm south side of Manchester trying to get to Salford.

Google maps takes me up to Leeds and across the Peaks on the M62 which brings me north side of Manchester. I don't know where the 50mph limit stops on the M1.

do you use Waze?

havent used the m1 north of sheffield for a while so cant help on that bit but for me if you have to drive then J29, A617 to Chesterfield and then A619 to Chapel is a decent route. Take the road over to Glossop and go in via M67 and you come in to Manchester at right side for skipping round ring road to Salford way I think....

But seriously unless you have a load of stuff to carry, on a Friday take a train, picturesque route and no stress (if they are running!)

Thanks, I will consider the train but was looking forward to the drive over the Peak District ( just not the Friday afternoon Manchester traffic).

There is no good way back on any day, and especially on a Friday. If you can get the train, I would.

Stockport is a nightmare at the moment, roadworks joining the A6 from the motorway mean the most direct route is snarled up, and it's usually pretty bad, as well as everyone then trying the alternatives.

I left Trafford Park last Thursday at 4.30pm and it took 2 and a half hours to get home to Chesterfield. That was trying two or three different routes once around Stockport using Waze, there just wasn't a traffic free route. Without traffic it'd be just over an hour.
