Canada getting rid of the nickle.

http://www.financialpost.com/m/wp/bl...ays-desjardins

An interesting topic for those of us that live north of the boarder and heres thought.

Canada already ditched the penny. And now the nickle next. Why not move the decimal point over and make a dime worth a penny. A dollar a dime. I hundred becomes ten bucks.

Then all of a sudden a 15k Kia becomes fifteen hundred bucks. A big Mack becomes 25 cents. A soft ice cream is a penny.

It would be like pricing everything back to like 60's standards. It's a crazy idea that sounds kinda cool to me.

Who would discuss?

Ya, we could be like Germany in the early 1930's Weimer Republic. What fun.....

That report by Desjardin is speculation at this point; however it is not inconceivable that the 5c piece could go the way of the penny some day.

Aside from the spelling (thanks Bimmette), nickel, dime and quarter are americanisms. I understood we were supposed to say "5 cents", "10 cents", and "25 cents"...

how come the 'merican way sounds so much better? damn.
Anyway, I agree with supernoob, just move the decimal place already!

^^^ right?? ^^^. The dollar would have so much clout. A penny could buy 3 gummie candies.

Or dinner and a movie with the lady would only cost maybe twenty bucks.

New set of pilot super sports... Balanced and mounted... What. Hundred ten bucks?

Buy a house in Vancouver for... A hundred fifty grand? Maybe 200k?

Or 40-50k in mission.

All sounds great!.... but I suspect employers would move the decimal on our pay checks too.

Makes sense, it cost more to create the penny and nickel than they're actually worth.

Depends where you live and how much money you've already made. There's federal income tax and there's provincial income tax. The latter varies by province and the differences can be significant.

Like most progressive tax systems, the marginal rates climbs the more money you make. Where I live, with net personal income the lowest marginal tax rate (under $37K) is about 20% and the highest is about 45% (>$200K). That's marginal, so the average tax rate on $100K is $24%. That's net income so personal exemption, RSP deductions, employment expenses are all deductible. Capital gains is taxed at a different rate. And, investment income from dividends has built in tax credits.

Yeah not sure if people are getting that....

Sure moving the decimal over would look good when youre buying things, but think about when you are being paid. Does making $10k/year sound fun or only $200/week? $1.50 Minimum wage would cause some protesting for sure.

Then you need to think about how the value would take a hit in the Global market too.

Does that matter? Look at the most hard hit countries where inflation runs rampant. In some places a ten thousand (whatever) bill won't but a carton of eggs.

The zeros really have no meaning.

Doing something like moving the decimal point over would create an extremely strong dollar and it wouldn't hurt much of anything terribly.

If anything fuel and electricity and heating prices use the penny the most. But if you look at any menu. And store... One would see lots of zeros at the end. The same logic used when getting rid of the penny can be employed when moving the decimal point.

And I wouldn't mind making $13,000 a year at all.

Wouldn't it be so cool to lay a 50 cent piece on a bar and buy a whiskey? Or a beer? Or a sarsaparilla?
