Is it just me?

Is it just me or are car companies just getting lazy with performance? What ever happened to naturally aspirated engines? I can't think of any BMW M, Merc AMG, or Audi coming out that has a naturally aspirated engine..

I'd take a couple mpg less over turbo lag any day! Nobody buys an M3 or M5 because its a fuel efficient car. They buy it for performance. If you want a fuel efficient car to drive everyday, a prius is a lot cheaper.. If you could afford buying the car you should be able to afford the gas.

Can't stand ignorant comments like this. It has nothing to do with what YOU want. The 3 series is BMW's biggest seller, bar none. With legislative action coming down by 2015, automakers are going to have to meet fleet-wide mpg ratings or get fined up the ass by the US government. Put big engines in M3's and M5's, they don't sell in volume. Your fleet leader in sales is going to have the biggest impact on your company's overall mpg rating. So, if YOU don't care about gas mileage, buy an M car.

Turbo lag? What turbo lag? Are you sure the new F30 has it? Do you have proof? No? Why the fuck even mention it, then?

Just because I can afford buying a $70k car doesn't mean I am willing to needlessly throw out my $$$ left and right (that includes gasoline).

Hahah you guys are getting really butt hurt here. It was just a comment and a opinion. Take it easy there and they said the F30 probably has the same N55 engine.. I have that engine in my car so I do have proof that it has turbo lag.

What do you expect when you make a ridiculous statement like the original post? Engine designers are not lazy and are driving incredible improvements in performance. The N52B30 made 255HP and 220ft-lbs (@ 2750-4250rpm). The N54 makes 302bhp 295ft-lbs. The N55 makes 315bhp and 330ft-lbs (@1200-5000rpm!), with less lag. That shit ain't free.

Would you really rather have a 330i over a 335i?

I'd rather have more torque and a flatter torque curve, and better mileage. If that comes with a tiny bit of turbo lag, so be it. Turbos are here to stay.

Chill out and motor on.

Well I'd take my 2011 335 over a 330 but I would also take a naturally aspirated 300hp over my twin scroll turbo. And btw way the 335 is 300bhp and 300lbtq..

You're correct about the 335i. I thought there was an application of the N55 that got 315&330, but I can't find it now so I guess I was mistaken.

Update: Actually, I wasn't mistaken. The N55 powers the 640i and 740i at 315 hp & 330 ft-lbs.

Yeah but i believe those engines in the 640 and 740 are tuned differently. Just like the N54 powers the 335is but has 320bhp and 370lbtq(with overboast) instead of 300bhp and 300lbtq in the 07-10 335i. I could be wrong though:/

You're correct. That's why they generate more power. If I recall correctly they have a bigger turbo, but I might be remembering that wrong. They're still N55s.

People do indeed base purchases on fuel consumption. I'd have bought an E90 M3 if it got even semi-reasonable mileage, but 14/20 is just irresponsible. I'm hoping the new F80 is at least similar to the current x35i cars in terms of mileage. I really don't care if it's as fast as the E9x cars, but I'd hope it's lighter, more efficient and out handles it.

Straight line performance is pretty high in nearly every car these days, I'm not as concerned with that as handling and a certain amount of efficiency. I'm not a fan of turbos, but if they keep performance high with better efficiency, I'm on board with that. Even electronic throttles don't feel as nice as mechanical connections, but they're just the way things have gone for efficiency's sake.

Umm, under your name it says: "Drives: BMW 335is". If that's true, you don't have the N55, but the N54 engine. And the N55 reportedly has less lag than the N54 (which doesn't have enough to bitch about).

I believe most of what everyone refers to turbo lag is really associated to the transmission and programming. I have never had lag with my 335i but its a stick. I had a bad delayed response with my 2007X3 and its was due to programming with the transmission which is happening now with the new X3, X5 and maybe other BMW's.

Remember this is the engine that obama bin laden wants you to have not what BMW wants you have. I noticed that the mpg numbers did not change much on the 5 series for 2012 when they put the little Obama 4 popper in it.

It will be interesting to see how that little thing will be holding up after 50,000 miles lugging the big heavy 5 around. My guess it will not be in too good of shape.

I'll ignore your ridiculous rambling at the start, but you realize that the rest of the world gets smaller engines in the 5er and 7er and they don't fall apart, right? I've been in a manual W220 S280 taxi with 700k+ kilometers on it. That's a heavier car with less power, and aside from a comical amount of nicotine build up, it seemed fine.
