Assuming it would be big $$? Anyone try this yet?

I believe it was a $5-600 option.

$500 and it gave you the rear sunshade as well as the rear side door shades. Retrofitting would be pricey, as you have to replace the entire rear deck as well as the two rear pillars, plus the actual shade and the switch for the driver side door.

I had a rear sunshade in my last car--it's definitely not worth the hassle. It was a nice feature OEM if it's part of a package, but that's it. Especially for an OP living in Minneapolis...

Just tint. The sunshades aren't worth it. Been there, done that.

It's one of those options that would be cool to have, but in reality once you start driving your car, you won't miss it or think twice about it ever again.

Sun shades are great. Very functional and gives a different feel to the interior. During the summer love to roll with the windows down and the shades up

Honestly I've found the sunshade most useful for highway driving at night... Keep the glare of headlights out of your rearview mirror when i'm out in the sticks heading to the cabin.

I have tints. The sunshade is just another layer to diminish the bright lights at night.

I understand the cost would be outrageous... it would more or less just be a fun project.

I'm surprised you have a problem with glare at night with tints. Your tint dark or light? I have 15% rear tint, which is dark. My last car had 30%, so lighter, but still didn't have glare.

Don't you have the autodim mirror?

Not grilling you - just trying to understand

Yeah I bet it would be expensive to retrofit. They are probably available in a 5'er or a 7'er. So maybe you can procure a replacement for those and make a custom rear deck to support it. I have a F36 so my rear deck is totally different so I cannot visualize yours.

You would need the equipment, the wiring, support and surrounds. Then the question would be if it would even fit when opening. One from a 5 or 7 might be larger than can be supported in a 3.

Best of luck - but do show if you end up taking a shot!

I haven't seen a sun shade on an f series car but previously the sun shade I saw had an articulating arm in the middle of the shade. I guess it would hardly obstruct your view but I though it was noticeable

That's not how it works. There are 2 arms that pivot from each side of the parcel shelf. They lift the shade into place and hold it there. When the shade is up, these arms are parallel and adjacent to the C pillars. When retracted, they are in the parcel shelf.

My experience with these was in my 2011 E90 so it may not hold true for the F30 but it's probably the same system. I ordered this on my car as I had an infant child at that time. The issue is the gaps between the shade and the pillars. The manual shades on the rear side windows had the same issue. On bright days, the shades allowed in too much light through these gaps.

Right now I have 35% tint and I'm pretty sure I have the auto diming rear view mirror.

I think I have sensitive eyes? Maybe it just bugs me more than the average dude.

I have it in my car. I feel it's more of a gimmick than anything else. It's been useful maybe a handful of times since I've had the car.

While I am not speaking to the concept of adding the rear sun shade, I do love this option. I use it all the time in the warmer months, but I also like the privacy it affords while parking my car with valuables inside.

I actually thought about this, but it involved too much and the costs start to rise. Spent the money on a new steering wheel instead

It belongs at the Driver's Window Switches.

Just for kicks, still have the part numbers handy...

Roller sun blind, rear window – 51467272130 x 1 - $378.06 USD
Rear Window Shelf – 51467301959 x 1 - $270.08 USD
Switch, window lifter – 61319218482 x 1 - $125.89 USD

Not too sure about the wire harness, I'm sure there needs to be a modification to it.

I have the rear shades. I honestly would not order them again. They do not do a good job at shading out the sun, and also the sides where the shade does not cover permits too much light through. I tried to use it during the summer, and learned that it's worthless. I have the F32, so no shades on the rear side windows. If I were to change the auto rear sun shade to make it better, I'd first make it more dimming, and make sure it covers the entire rear window. As far as trying to retro-fitting it, my opinion is dont even bother. Not worth it, unless its 1K or less in cost.
