328xi Track Experiences?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Long story short, by regular track car is at the shop and I'm paid up for a track day. I'm advanced and instruct.

Does anyone have any first had experience running a stock F30 328xi on track?
I'll be on All-Season Run Flats!, stock pads and stock fluid.

Will the stock brakes even hold hold up? (4X - 25min)

I'd love to hear first hand experiences.

Make sure you get some videos to post if you do. I have an F30 (stock 328d xDrive) and an F31 (Dinan Stage 1) and I cannot imagine either being much fun at the track.

I'd see if you could postpone in all honesty.

Well, for some reason my club got a phenomenal deal on a track rental. It's only $100 for 4 sessions @ 25min and includes dinner!!

Typically we are at $250-$300/day depending on track.

So I might as well run something, been thinking of just pitting out after 15min or so or just run 3 sessions so I don't kill my tires/brakes.

I'll definitely take videos. I use Harry's and an iPhone.

I need to get psyched about tracking this F30 and seeing what it can do! I'll be up against GT3's, GT4's, Turbos etc...with much stickier rubber.

I mean what the hell for $100 have at it. This sounds like a bad episode of top gear gone wrong though. The one where the 3 amigos go 3 wide to prevent others from passing them comes to mind.

You won't be winning anything out there, but the car will certainly make it around the track. Change the brake fluid to high-temp fluid if at all possible, that's the #1 upgrade I'd do on any car I'd be taking to the track.

25 minutes is a long session. Play it by feel. If the brakes or tires overheat, either go in or do a cool-down lap.

what is your dedicated track car?

your 328xi should be fine
just don't push it too hard
you say you're advanced ... you should be able to tell when your brakes are starting to fade or if your tires are not giving you enough traction

a local BMW dealership held a free track day out here at Autoclub Speedway
all kinds of people brought their stock daily driver BMW's to the track
as well as some totally modded ones
of course most of them were terrible at looking ahead and following good lines... and braked at wrong points and didn't do a good job of giving point by's ...
but no one's car blew up or crashed

Didn't take my 328i to the track but took it for some runs around the canyons pushing it pretty hard on stock everything. Tbh, I don't feel too safe with the car weight to tire patch ratio when at it's limits. The all seasons were squealing around a lot of the wider turns, didn't have any problems with the brakes though but it did feel like they were starting to fade. This was from highway speed braking so you may have more problems with that on the track. And just for reference, I used to track my s2000 in high intermediate run groups. I ran 255/40 tires on it so the 225/45 on the much heavier F30 scares me.

I would also be interested in hearing more, I'm also in Chicagoland. However I am a track inexperienced, so...

I would like to to get an intro into track driving, but certainly need instruction. Advice on where to begin? I'm not trying to break any driving records, just want to drive fast in a safe environment

That's a crazy deal! I'd bring it and play it by ear as others have said. I've seen all types of cars here at Sonoma Raceway(formerly Infineon formerly Sears Point) from Prius' to vans haha

But if I was you, I'd run 15 mins of hard driving and use a couple of laps for cool down and take it easier so you hit the clipping points vs trying to get a PR.

Bottom line you know what you're doing so you'll be fine. As long as you don't try to piss in the tall weeds with the big dogs and do something stupid it will be a blast. Just enjoy the day for what it is and have a good story to tell.

Hell if it were me I'd go full on crazy and decal the hell out of the thing just for the day. Larsen biscuits and Peniston Oils would be good sponsors.

Porsche Club - Autobahn South Course Afternoon DE, 3PM - 8PM. It was the first time that they had an HPDE like that (late afternoon). Porsche Barrington sponsored something and they had a nice spread for dinner. $100/included dinner with Pulled Pork, Bourbon chicken, salad, sides, cookies and beer! Typically the club does't run Autobahn.

The south course is a momentum track. Not as hard on the brakes like Blackhawk Farms and doens't have many long straights so high hp isn't a huge advantage, like Road America.

The stock brakes started to fade 20min into a 25min session. It was hot and humid out. 90 and muggy. The body roll on a 328xi is quite dramatic and the all-season tires were a dramatic difference in grip (as expected). I havne't run such low grip tires in a long time. I run a 997.2 with Sport Cup 2's and sport active suspension (SPASM).

I ran about 15min for each session, being smooth and running 7/10's. It was fun, I didn't pass any cars but held my own. I know half the cars/guys in my run group so it was all good.

This event was experienced only.

In Chicago, Windy City BMW started doing track days the last 2-3 years. For a while, they didn't hold any track days, maybe for 5+ years.

Last year they did one event (weekend at Autobahn). This year they have two events.

Porsche Club has a specific Novice day each year at Blackhawk Farms in April. You don't have to own a Porsche to join the HPDE and they run 7 or 8 events including renting out Road America for the whole weekend over Memorial Day.

Of the car marques, Porsche holds the most track days.
There are other clubs and "companies" that hold track days.
Almost everyone uses Club Registration or Motorsport Reg. You can search for events and signup from those sites.

Sounds like you had a blast. Perhaps this was the same track day one of the guys at Porsche Barrington (where I bought my Cayman also) had mentioned to me last week. They say that they are gonna set up for more days later in the season, so I'll be looking forward to those. Have a bit of DE experience under my belt, but never with the Cayman (or 428 for that matter!)
