Adaptive M Suspension

When I price out a car through my buying service, 328i Sport Line, one of the options is adaptive M suspension. I dont see that when using the 'build your own' feature on the BMW site.

Is the reason its not coming up due to it being standard with the Sport Line?

Adaptive suspension isn't standard so it's most likely to be a mistake with the build app, which has quite a lot of inaccuracies.

In the US what is standard on the Sport line is M sport suspension but that is a "passive" system (ie not changeable at the press of a button).

From the international BMW web site:

The optional Adaptive M suspension provides further reinforcement for the dynamic driving characteristics of the new BMW 3 Series Sedan and exploits their visual effect to the full, without comprising in any way on comfort.

In the optional Adaptive M suspension, a lowering of the chassis by ten millimetres and electronically controlled dampers result in increased agility. During the journey, sensors continuously measure data and control the shock absorber valves in the Adaptive M suspension according to the driving situation and road profile. This takes place for each wheel individually so that optimum road holding is guaranteed at all times.

An electronic control unit processes information on wheel, lateral and longitudinal acceleration, on vehicle speed as well as on steering wheel position in order to adapt the damper parameters to the road profile and driving situation. In addition to this, the driver can individually alter the setting of the suspension to increase comfort or sporting character via the Driving Experience Control.

It depends on the driver. I read a review and you will only take advantage of the Adaptive M suspension in really hard cornering or rough surfaces in comfort mode.

I actually ordered without the Adaptive but then after reading the review I added it. Its somewhere on this forum.

Heck yeah, if you are going to have some fun with your car.

I already have a toy car ( Grand Sport Corvette ), and I am looking at the 328i as a daily driver, but I still want to take it up some twisty mountains from time to time.

On a Corvette, the option is $3500, mine does not have it as I got a zero optioned one, with only the dual mode exhaust.

So 800$ is a deal, IMO.

Some people have talked about getting Adaptive M suspension and leaving it in Sport all the time. Which to me seems completely pointless and a total waste of money getting the option in the first place.

Personally, I think if you prefer to drive with comfortable suspension most of the time but also like to push the limits occasionally then it's worth considering. If you just like a sports setup all the time then it's probably not worth it.

I also wonder whether it could be expensive to maintain further on down the line. If you don't plan on keeping the car beyond warranty this probably isn't going to be an issue but springs, being mechanical devices that take a constant daily battering, will need replacing at some stage, and making the system much more complicated is surely just going to make it much more expensive to fix.

I got it for those days that I want to push it in Sport mode beyond the regular Sport suspension.

I also already ordered my H&R Sport springs and I haven't taken delivery as yet.

So is M sport adaptive is "sportier" than M sport passive?

I've not read anything to indicate that.

Don't think we will know until the M package is out. Right now you choice is Sport or Adaptive M

Correct.

Passive sports suspension is slightly less firm than adaptive suspension in sports mode. The reason passive sports suspension is marginally more forgiving is that, unlike owners of adaptive suspension, owners of passive sports suspension have to live with the sport ride all the time.

I actually found the passive sports suspension on the sports line I tested very satisfactory I thought it was standard suspension.

But to address your first post.. ya same for the australian website it's not on there but definitely an option.

Are we not missing the point that an active system gives a different and better car control, whatever the setting?

It is not about the setting values alone, it is about how the suspension works. The comfort or sport setting is only part of the difference, it is continually adapting to give the best ride for the conditions, even when set to sport. Sport is not a 'fixed' setting as in the EDC in the E92 M3.

I've not had a chance to try the active suspension in the F30, but in the F10 it is a far better suspension setup than a passive system, IMO. Much more comfortable in sport setting, particularly at lower speeds, but firms up when you need it.

A definite option for my next car, an F31,

I remain very confused for the suspension options in Canada.

For Canada:

1. Does the Sport Line come with the passive sport suspension standard? The original ordering guide that is a sticky says nothing about an extra charge for sport suspension. The bmw.ca website says nothing about sport suspension and/or if it's included or if you pay extra.
2. Does the Sport Line have the Adaptive M Suspension on it in Canada standard? Or is it an option at all? I don't see it on the website or any ordering guide for Canada.
3. A more recent ordering guide post on this forum shows a $400 option for 'Sport Suspension' in Canada. What is that? It looks like it applies to all 'lines' of cars. But bmw.ca doesn't have that $400 option. And neither does the original ordering guide that is a sticky on this forum.

Please help. I have ordered a 335i with premium package and was expecting the sport suspension (at least passive) and frankly I was expecting to have the button to switch from eco pro, to comfort, to sport to sport + because I saw (at the time of ordering) no extra $ option for sport suspension, or m-adaptive or otherwise.

Thank you.
