How to retrieve engine and car history

Hello,

I'm not sure where to post my question or even how to formulate it properly. I've heard that BMW can scan the car systems for the driving history and other interesting info. RPMs, speed, etc etc. Is there a way (official or not) to access this information as the owner of the car?

Thank you

I think I read something about F30's having a 'blackbox' but have no clue how to access that data.

According to my research there is a lot of interesting info that can be retrieved with a BMW software called DIS, used by BMW themselves and dealerships. It's a diagnostic tool. Whether it works with the f30 or if it's available somewhere I don't know.

Almost all new cars sold in the US have EDRs (Event Data Recorders or "black boxes"). Per the NHTSA in 2013, they are currently actively installed in approx 96% of new passenger and light-duty vehicles.

Manufacturers originally started putting EDRs in cars in order to perform post-collision analysis and gather statistics that could help them figure out which safety systems were actually most beneficial. Now, of course, it's used by ins. companies (or others) frequently in accident related litigation.

The US D.O.T. mandates that any manufacturer who installs them also provide the software and hardware tools necessary to extract information.

In Dec 2012, the DOT proposed new rules which specified certain exact data collection minimums for EDRs and would also require their installation in all new passenger vehicles effective Sep 1, 2014. The public was given until Feb, 2013 to comment on this proposal.

I have no idea what happened after that.

I know BMW called my buddy after his X5 threw a check engine light... And he never went to the dealer. I wonder what else they monitor remotely.

I think this only happens with BMW assist.
like when your close to a required service your car actually sends a signal yo the dealership and the the dealer calls you to tell you an appointment is required.
