MY 2013 0-60 times

I was perusing the new configurator and noticed that bmw has posted new 0-60 times for all the models, including xdrive. Somewhat interesting:

328i MT 5.7s
328i AT 5.8s
328i xdrive (AT only) 5.7s

335i MT 5.4s
335i AT 5.1s
335i xdrive MT 5.1s
335i xdrive AT 4.8s

3 observations - 1)no surprise about the grip advantage for xdrive, 2) confirmation that the AT is faster on the 335i, 3) surprised they are not offering 6MT on 328i xdrive

I thought it was uncommon for a AWD car to be faster than the same car with RWD, because AWD is heavier, no?

I noticed some of the videos on YouTube were posting faster 0-60 times than what was originally posted. Not sure how they goofed on the numbers. I thought these cars were thoroughly tested. Or perhaps they did some engine tweaking on the 2013s?

AWD always take off faster because of two extra legs.

I'm surprised 335 AT is so much faster than MT. Another nail on the coffin

so why is the AT slower on the 328i?

and also doesn't AWD mean more drivetrain power loss?

I think there are two separate issues here. AWD is faster because of the two extra wheels. No matter how much power you got, it's ultimately down to wheel spin on the ground. You can only do so much with two going straight.

As for AT vs MT vs 335 vs 328, there are two many factors. Engine, turbo, transmission, software, skill ... I have no idea.

Now I'm back to MT/AT debate again

Yeah, all of the magazine tests on the 328i ranged from 5.4-5.8 seconds with the AT. I don't remember seeing any with the 6MT. I'm sure there is a method to BMW's madness- similar to the under-rated horsepower figures...who knows. There are so many variables that can affect performance tests, I'm guessing a mfr is better off being as conservative as possible and advertise performance numbers that can be attained by the majority of drivers under a wide range of conditions.

Motor Trend achieved a 4.7 sec 0-60 with the 335i 8AT in this review:

And they pulled off 4.9 seconds with 335i 6MT in the S4 comparison, but I think there is something whacky with that car because the braking distance was 20% longer (131ft vs 109ft) than the video above, perhaps attributable to all season tires vs summer tires:

I wonder if base line has better 0-60 time because of the smaller wheels.

Garage List
328i 0-60 times on the BMW UK site are still 5.9s (manual) and 6.1s (auto). Maybe it's the rubbish roads we have over here... you can't do 0-60 on a UK road without having to swerve to avoid a pothole!

Early on that was the case but today's AWD systems are much better allowing no drop off and sometimes performance improvements as others have said.

Wow. Great catch.
That's is very surprising.
I've been reading the mag reviews and taking note of their times, as BMW's always tend to be conservative.

The 335i AT vs MT is very interesting as they were both rated to be the same. In real world testing, that was shown to be true as the best 0-60 has been 4.7sec for 335i AT and MT.
I'd like to know more from BMW as to why they changed this.
Is there perhaps a new "launch" feature with the AT for 2013!?!?

And, the 328i MT was .2 sec quicker to 60 than the 328i AT.
Now, the MT is listed as only .1 sec quicker.
Perhaps there is launch control?!?

The car has insufficient power for this to be an issue.

With the new high torque engines (and yes, even 255 lb-ft at 1250 is considered high torque), AWD will have the advantage out the hole esp with good tires - its just a traction issue. Most of that advantage is in the 0-30 mph, prob even at 30-60mph, and I'm sure the RWD will pull ahead 60-100 mph.

I dont want to get into a AWD vs. RWD discussion, but with the shoehole difference provided by xDrive, the 335i xDrive with 8AT now launches faster than the S4 DCT (4.8 vs. 4.9s) which is always one of the things that S4 fans like to throw in your face.

I was more interested in the tranny differences and why the 0-60 times got revised so much. I mean these are faster than the e90 times they used to post.

When you click on each individual model...under Features & Specs its there under specs.

Back to OP ...I knew the F30 335i AT felt quicker than my E90 335i. The F30 is more than enough power for me

Identical to the sedans. The weight difference will be 50-75 pounds with an ever so slightly different weight distribution.
