Just drove F30 sport 335 coupe owner

Just got back from the Team USA event. Drove a red 335. I own a 2012 e93 (N55) m sport.
I still cant believe this new sedan feels faster and lighter than my coupe. Im kinda pissed! Same engine, so is the new 8 speed transmission that much of a difference. Im probably really going to buy a tune for my engine now!

I think the new trans does make a big difference. I have test driven 3 F30 335s and its power delivery is seamless and its feels pretty quick.

I got a chance to test drive a 135i w/ DCT ( before I decided to go w/ the F30 335 which is sitting waiting for a boat) and I found the 8 AT in the 335 as close as you could get to that DCT 135 car which blew me away as compared to my 135 w/ the 6 spd steptronic.

Now--a 335 w/ 8 sp AT and a BMW power kit.....could get interesting.

Yes, closer spaced gearing + faster shifting with the sport auto tranny, and the new F30 might be a shade lighter as well. When you say e93, I'm assuming you mean e92 for the coupe.

Faster shifting? You mean $500 for paddle shifters. Does anyone really believe it will have better performance? If so I have a gear shift knob to sell you that is more aerodynamic and will shave off 0.1 seconds from your 0-60 time.

From BMW's site:

If BMW wrote it, it has to be real. Hey, every bit counts, even .010 seconds.

Convertibles are always noticeably heavier than the sedan or coupe versions of the 3 series. This probably accounts for most or all of the difference.

I think the powerkit is overpriced for 20hp..... and if it's anything like the Hartge kit where it only works at 70%+ throttle, then I'm off board.

Most of the tunes on the market are offering almost triple the gains that BMW powerkit is offering.

I think you misinterpreted what was said. It's not the physical object, its the new AT box that does the shifting. For all one cares, you can just put it in DS and let it shift, in fact you would probably slow it down with sloppy shifting.

And btw, not all F30 335i comes with the paddle shifters. I am not quite sure how you could have possibly gotten confused.

Let's be smarter here. When they say its faster, its not the paddles or what you actually touch. It's the transmission shifting gears faster and more smoothly and delivering the power in a better way. I found the new F30 has a really nice sound to it too. On sport mode, every time you high rev and shift it does a super cool "gargle" sound.

I'm confused. You said you owned a 2012 coupe, but the e92 is the coupe. The e93 is the convertible.

The E93 is the heaviest one of the E9x club. That's what you are feeling when switching to an F30, plus a new chassis/setup.

The gearbox isn't the main reason, trust me. I had an 8AT in my former F10.
It's the weight.

Cheers

I am going to wait and see what the kit offers and pricing. I had a JCW kit on my Mini and it was perfect. No issues, no worrying when bringing the car in for service, no throwing codes.

Yes, they are priced out of their minds ( as always w/ German cars ) but I am not looking for the ultimate in power ( have a sports car for summer driving to fill need for speed). If its just power at high throttle they can keep it, like you said.

Whilst the powerkit may not give you large numbers, it sounds like it delivers power where you need it. With hartge all the power appears to come on above 70% throttle.

Back to original thread, yes my f30 335i with 8AT feels very very quick

Then it's the OP who caused the confusion. Title of this thread is "Just drove F30 sport 335 coupe owner", so we assume he's a coupe owner not a convertible owner. Duh!

Garage List
Nearly 500 extra pounds and two fewer gears, yes, the E93 will be slower and less sporty than an F30.

Shouldn't the "faster", "smoothly" and "delivering the power in a better way" shifting result in quicker acceleration times? On the E90 335i vs. the 335is of 20 additional hp, the 0-60 times may have improved by 0.1 seconds if that. The acceleration time differences were negligible between the two. If anything might have increased, it might have been the top end speed. But even that is negligible given a difference of 20 hp (3 mph gain maybe?).

So I wonder if the "Auto Sport Transmission" adds 20 additional hp? Or maybe even 10 additional hp. Maybe for an additional $500 you are getting an additional 0.0001 second "faster" car and a set of paddles. Just saying, BMW has mastered marketing hype. If there were even a modicum of performance gains to be had, BMW would be all over it with performance numbers to back it up. Instead all they have is "hyperbole".

Just some food for thought.
