HUD opinions

Just wondering if anyone opted for the heads up display and what your opinion of it are.

Yes, I love it. As soon as i get in my truck I miss having it. The navi directions are cool. I also like seeing who's calling me while I'm driving right on the windshield. I'll be getting it on any future BMW's as well.

I love it! If you are getting navigation then it is worth it. The only watch out is if you use polarized sun glasses. You will be able to see it, but faintly and if you are driving on white surface like concrete along with sun glare then almost impossible to see with the polarize sun glasses.

I feel HUD is useful and a good safety feature. However, I can drive another car without it. Or, I'll likely not be able to rent a car anytime in the near future...

I've only had my car for 24 hours, but the HUD seems pretty cool. The digital speedometer reading is a nice feature, but one I could probably love without. Much better is the ability to see incoming calls, change radio stations/songs from iPod/iPhone, and get navigation instructions. I can see myself getting used to these features pretty quickly and coming to expect them in any car I drive.

My first car with this feature, and it's hard to drive any other car without it! A must have in my opinion for all of the reasons above. I rarely look at the analog speedo anymore and to see calls and radio/song info is a great feature.

Absolutely love it! Dont know that I will ever want a car without one. I almost never seem too look at the guage cluster, unless its for fuel mpg. I too have the polarized glasses issue, so next time at the optomitrist I'll be getting non polarized sun glasses.

I'm glad I got it, especially for the nav info. But I'm surprised and disappointed that it can't display the tach (rpm). It should have more configuration options. If someone figures out how to code the tach display, I'll have to take the leap and code my car.

HUD is excellent. Wouldn't consider a car that doesn't offer it.

Obviously you can live without it, but it's a convenience and it adds a certain techno whiz-bang factor. I love the HUD personally and would definitely have this feature on the list for my next car, but I acknowledge that not everyone would be enamoured with it to the tune of $1500.

i test drove a 335i with it and didn't like it at all. main reason i wanted the tech package was for the nav. so i got it anyway. now, i think i can't live without it. you never know how awesome it is until you don't have it. being able to see your speed all the time helps a lot. and having directions built into your screen is an accident prevented.

Not really.

It also includes the Widescreen LCD, Enhanced Bluetooth, Enhanced USB, 3 years of BMW Assist, and the Head-up Display. All totaled, it's a good deal.

And those who don't get Enhanced Bluetooth, Enhanced USB, and BMW Assist are the ones who run back here the week they get their cars and ask "Why can't I stream Pandora?" or "Why can't I get album art to display on my screen?" or "Why can't I read text messages in iDrive?" or "Where are my splitscreen options?" or "What do you mean I need a Y cord to play my iPhone music?" and we tell them, as nicely as we can, "You should have gotten the Tech package like we recommended."

I was sold on the HUD on the test drive as I liked the speed info. However, as was alluded to above, the real use of the HUD is all of the rest of the features that can be accesssed without taking your eyes off the road, like scrolling through radio presets, recent telephone calls so you can make calls and selecting iPod music, in addition to the directions. I don't like it when the NAV talks to me so I really like the HUD NAV combo. My wife on the other other hand fines the HUD very distracting while driving, so she is happy that her X5 does not have this feature.

Unfortunately for me (2012 f30) took from dealer stock and I have the tech package with HUD but had no idea enhanced BT and Assist are not included.... 2013 it's a more complete package I wish I knew and I def would have opted for the enhanced as ive had it before and it's a huge plus

Skipped it on our X3. Got it on my new 335 and now I am pissed at myself for not getting it on the X3 as well. It was only $900 more to get it with the tech package vs just navigation and its worth every penny. I love the radio/music display when searching through presets or playlists.

OK, so I've had my car for 3 days, and I LOVE the HUD. Would definitely get it again.

Yes, I also love the HUD

the only problem is the reflection of the dashboard in the windshield ....

One needs to understand about the HUD. Yes, it relays information to the driver, but not at the expense of distraction. So in it's minimum state, it constantly displays digital speed only. If you have navigation option & activate it, then that comes up as well.

Otherwise, in my M-Sport with pro nav, I can music on my right side knurled knob & change stations with it. The HUD displays it for a few seconds. Similarly with BT phone setup. The Mode button selects between the 2.

Other useful bits of info come up on the HUD from time to time - not randomly, it's operationally based. I would like to see more, but since I've had my car for 3 days, I'm still discovering it. Maybe it will throw up a warning if say oil is low or if tyre pressure is low. Not sure, but it would be good if it did.

What it has displayed over the past few days is great. Phone details, radio, multimedia.

Is it worth it? Yes. I like it and when I set my first navigation route, it will come into its own. Looking forward to discovering more displays.
