Instrument cluster not very visible...

Anyone else notice that during the day, when the "auto-lights" are off, that the instruments seem to need lighting? I find the speedo and tach especially look like they need lighting. In my 550 the cluster was always lit, white when the headlights were off and red when they were on.

The red is easy to read but there's no white light during the day.

My speedo and tach are both very easy to see, even in bright direct sunlight. Are you sure you have the brightness turned up all the way? (It's a little rotary wheel just to the right of the headlight control knob.) If so, perhaps there's an electrical fault preventing the instruments from being illuminated.

Now if only I could make the steering wheel transparent...

Thank god for HUD. The steering wheel seems to be in the way to view the top half of any of the gauges..

There is no "day" illumination. Op is referring to day time driving, not the red, which is adjustable for brightness, at night. I too thought the gauges were a bit "dull" for lack of a better word, during the day compared to for example an Infiniti which has similar to Op's 550, the white gauges during the day and backlit when the headlights were on.

But the HUD is a perfect equalizer. Love it!

Is there coding where you can default dash back lighting to remain on?

I feel the same way. It is hard to read during the day. Most new cars have a day illumination too. Don`t understand why BMW did it this way.
