Exclamation Re: Searching BMW NA inventory

Is there a good way for us (end users) to search the BMW NA inventory database, for cars either en-route to dealerships or sitting on a BMW lot somewhere?

My car is taking it's sweet time being built, and I am wondering if I can find something similar sooner.

Thanks guys.

Looks like you have a pretty tall order seems unlikely that a dealer would order/spec one like that, so ordering will probably be best.

I think it would be nearly impossible to find this car in inventory. It is the most expensive 3 series you can build (except AH) and you want a coral red interior.

This is a close one but of course not exactly waht you want.

Was worth a shot.

My CA hinted at the fact that if my delivery goes into February, I may loose out on the the $1000 holiday credit and the $750 loyalty and $300 BMW app credits, since they can only be locked in for 60 days. That throws off all of my numbers!

Any truth to that?

No kidding. MSRP was $61k. Thanks for checking though.

Yes, you need to place your order by Jan 2nd, and the credits lock for 60 days. If your CA can get a Germany (not South Africa) build, you might be able to make it happen. You'd better hurry!

Dealers don't seem to like to order many $60k+ 3ers for the lot. Bumps into 528i territory.

Yeah most people who can afford the 60k+ tag would go with a loaded 528 or even a decently equipped 535 (my dealer quoted me 48k for a base 535, and you can imagine how much tech I can add to that with another 12-14k on top of that).

While I don't disagree with you, it would be a stretch to think that everyone considering a loaded ($60K+) 335i is silly for not considering a 5 series.

When I was shopping, I really wanted to get a 5 series because of the nicer interior, etc. After I drove them, I was let down. It felt very big, not sporty, and just like a big highway cruiser. The F30 is much more agile, nimble, and fun to drive. So, even though I could have definitely got a very loaded 535i for what my AH3 cost, the driving experience was just world's apart.

For the record, never even bothered test driving a 5.

A few days after I placed my order, I got a ride in a friends 550i and boy was I right. The new 5 'feels' substantially bigger and much more disconnected than the 3. By a lot! Not exactly my idea of a sport sedan.

My car is already in production. Production end date should be around 12/19. I'm worried that I'm cutting it too close since I placed my order 11/24. Germany build.

What are you worried about then? Your car will arrive at the end of January, a full month to spare for the lock period.

I guess I'm not understanding the whole 'lock' thing properly then. Does the 60 day lock count start Jan 2nd, or from the time I actually placed my order to build the car (Nov. 24th in my case?

The lock date goes 60 days from when the program ends. As long as you've ordered before Jan 2, you have 60 days i.e. March 3rd to pay for your car.

Yes, this is why I said MOST. Unfortunately people like us are the minority of BMW buyers (how many people are on forums like this, vs how many BMWs are sold?)

For every person who buys a 3 series for it's sporty characteristics and driving pleasure, there are another 2 who want a BMW for badge and bragging/image. These people will take a 5 series over a 3 any day, cause it's bigger, has more room, and is more "executive".

Dealerships are obviously in this for the money, and thus they will rather appeal to the majority, aka the "well if I can get a 5 for the price of the 3, why wouldn't I" crowd.

That said, I originally wanted a 2012 535, since I often go on road trips with at least 4-5 people in the car, and the older (2007) 3 series had ridiculous rear leg room. But after test driving a 535, i was totally disappointed in how it felt. Yes, once you floor it there's the revving and speed, but there was no road feel. Then I spotted the new 3 in the dealership, and the extra rear legroom makes all the diff.

60k i would get a very low mileage m3. Maybe a 2011 or a 2012 that someone used for a few thousand miles no brainer. Even a brand new 335is. I dont know about a 60k 335. Is it a lease or a purchase? Who is gonna buy that thing when you want to get rid of it?

Let's put it this way. If my budget were 80k, I would probably still buy the same car, and put the 20k towards retirement.

This will be a lease. My first BMW lease ever. No more buying brand new cars for me. I always take a hit on the trade-in/resell. I guess I'm bad with that. I can't even sell my e90 330i for a decent price, even though I know it is pretty rare and is in high demand (6MT+Sport). With a lease, on a car this unique and relatively expensive for it's class, I now have one less thing to worry about. No more time wasted posting ads. No more agonizing over selling a used car or trading it in and throwing money down the drain. I'd rather throw that money down the drain gradually, slowly, in small increments, over a 39 months lease period. When time for a new car comes, all I will be occupied with will be should I get the f30 M340i or the f36 4 Gran Coupe.

M3: The obvious choice, but I really just need a daily driver right now. An all-season, no-fuss daily driver. One with which I feel safe handing over the keys to my wife, for those times when I need to borrow her Subaru. PLUS, the lack of an xDrive throws the M out of the equation (northeast).

335is: I do not think it is wise to lock myself in for 3 years to an outgoing model. Added to that, no xDrive, no four door option. PLUS with the f30 you get the 8 speed sport auto, MUCH improved interior (IMO), HUD, dynamic handling, ..., xDrive and four doors.

People are very different and have very different needs. It's interesting. 5 years ago I would have auctioned off one of my kidneys for an M3. 2 years ago, you could have sent me, willingly, to a labor camp in exchange for a base model 335is. Life changes, people change, responsibility and priorities take charge.

BMW should absolutely be commended for being able to successfully pull off the 335i, 335is and M3 (very similar yet very different cars), without too much self-competition and shooting itself in the foot. Three unique buying demographs and without overlapping their market purchase points. It will be interesting to see how things develop now, throwing in the 4 series and 4 gran coupe in the bowl.

There is nothing wrong with a $60K 335i. I just sold my 2600 mile 2012 E92 M3 ($76K MSRP) to buy a $65K MSRP ActiveHybrid 3. It's not a no-brainer to buy a used $60K M3 for the same money as a $60K 335i. If you've owned a $60K M3, you would understand.

The M3 is a spectacular beast of a car, but it is no F30 335i. The tech on the M3 is dated, the 14mpg is embarrassingly bad, and the ride is rough on broken city streets. The F30 is pretty much the opposite, while still retaining the "fun value" of a BMW, i.e. plenty quick around town.

There will always be plenty of people to buy a used, highly optioned car. I sold my car (very heavily optioned M3) in under 2 weeks, while other M3s languish for sale on M3Post for 3-4 months at a time.

It cost me $650/month over the course of 12 months to own a brand-new custom-ordered, fully-loaded M3. Loved every minute of it. But now I'm looking forward to a better daily driver that will be lots of fun, in a different way.
